Taking Prednisone and Prednisolone combined ?

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hi, at the moment I am tapering and take Panacort Prednisone : I am doing 15mg one day then 13mg the next for a month, as per Rheumy requust. My problem is I ran out of Panacort 5mg tablets, but have some Solone Prednisolone 5mg in date from before.

I am due to take the 13mg dose, can I use the Solone Prednisolone 5mg with Panacort 1mg tablets.? Or until I see my chemist would it be best to take 13 - 1mg tablets of the Prenisone which I normally take.?

Thanks for any advice :

Prednisolone and Prednisone are pretty similar (you can  look at Pred converters online), but Prednisolone is a bit more effective. Basic information is the Prednisone is converted in the liver into Prednisolone. In my opinion you can take the 2x5mg Prednisolone and add the Prednisone as recommended until you get any other medical advice.

Eileen can probably give you additional information regarding bioavailability and metabolism.

Thank you Magy, all went well : I'm looking to changing to  Prednisolone if it is more effective...

It shouldn't make any difference, the only real difference is that prednisolone is immediately effective as it is the active form, the prednisone must be processed by the liver to become prednisolone before it can act. The only way you can find out is to try it and see what happens.

Hi, all went well thanks until I saw chemist today "

But I do have a question, in your opinion do you think that the prednisolone is better to take long term than the Prednisone? I can get it if I need to change, my Dr put me on Prednisone and I just never questioned it and have been using it for 16 months.

But I did feel that the few days I took prednisolone the pain eased faster. I thought it was just me having a few good days or in my head lol

      Thanks Again Eileen

Prednisolone is ready to go as soon as it is absorbed, less than an hour. Prednisone has to pass through the liver to be turned into prednisolone so takes longer. And for anyone with liver issues it is preferable.

But it comes down to what you feel better with. I started with prednisolone and had no problems. Methyl prednisolone was awful (didn't work and side effects). Now I am on a form of prednisone you take at night and it's working by morning so the difference in time is accounted for.
