Tamsulosin Hydrochloride side effects

I took this medication for a slightly enlarged prostate for four months. Dry ejaculation and dull orgasm were not the only side effects since I developed virtigo which made it impossible to drive a car and made me sick.

I returned to my Lady GP and we agreed that I should syop the drug for one month to see whether the veryigo ceased and what effect this had on sexual activity. The dizziness imediately lessened and ejaculation and orgasm returned to normal. I still need to visit the bathroom two to three times a night.

I am not sure where this leaves me. My blood test shows a normal PSA reading and I am due a further review with my GP this month. Does anybody know of an alternative treatment?

    Frankly there is no effective "alternative" treatment if by that you mean somthing herbal etc.  The side effect of dry ejaculations is very well known and underplayed although when I have an orgasm it is better than it was!

    I left the tablets at home on one occasion and regretted it!  Peeing frequently and with difficulty very weak stream.  Take the tablets and return to less frequent and peeing - if not like a stallion - like a small pony!

    Are you sure the symptom is vertigo and not agoraphobia or claustrophobia because you mentioned being in a car.   The indication of slight dizziness is a common denominator after taking T.H. especially with other tablets.  I would suggest that you take the T.H. two hours before you make any car journey - to allow the ‘half life’ to set in. My own side-effect is viagra style errection for a day! And it is ransom. I come off them few days.

Hello there Mr Spock can you tell me more about your viagra type side effect, was it something you noticed the very first time you took T.H. or was it as a result of being on them for a few months, is it the same side-effect everytime you take it day after day.

      This happended, the first time, when I first took the T.H. I laughed it off, but the specialist looked quite concerned.  Anyway, three years on.  Every now and then - quite irregularly - this catches you out.  I have not kept a diary.  I simply just come off T.H. for a few days.  If this becomes painful - before it does; for you will know, I will simply MB

      Thank you very much for your reply, i have just been given my first packet of these under the name Pamsvax xl 400mg & if i have the same side effect you had i will be more than happy smile awww well if it stops me going to the toilet 5 times a night will also be a good result too. Hope you have a wonderful xmas & thanks again.

      it is nice to know that there are others in the 1 in 10,000 range of this side effect.  anything better than going to tiolet when one tried to concentrate on doing something important. Have a great xmas and a good sleepy new year.

    I'd forgotten the side effect - viagric!  In my case not very pronounced just a slight stirring and extension in the trousers.  I don't in any case have difficulties! 

    The other reported side effects - a full head of hair and growing breasts sadly do not occur

    IMHO this would have to be one of the worst drugs ever made - yet its the gold standard for most urologists? Think about it. It relaxes sphincters. That means you stand a good chance of getting reflux problems, leaky bum etc. the vertigo problem is very real. I couldnt bend forward to empty the dishwasher (handy!). The side effects build up slowly with this drug. First you get dry throat, then dry mouth, then not enough saliva to swallow. Then the saliva glands go crazy and it feels as if you have a burning mouth and tongue. You dont associate this with the drug so then you get on the specialist merry go round and none have a clue what is wrong. Many want you to take anti depressants ( it sure makes you depressed!) then at about 12 months in you get the hallucinations even though one has been stable all your life. This is totally scarey as you are wide awake, you talk to people its just so real. OK so now you know this is nasty, nasty stuff so PLEASE take your medicine and go and get a TURP done. Its a very simple procedure and you are only in hospital 3 days. Please dont get the green light as you will be back again in 3 years. The drug has a half life of 5 months (not a misprint) so the chap above curing dry ejaculation the next day truly got it wrong. The testing of this drug is truly worrying as it was done in the USSR with those developing side effects  dropped so as not to skew the results. I really had to dig and call in favours to get this info and it took 8 months. Just in case anyone reading this has some of these symptoms you can get relief by taking 400 mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid twice a day. Takes a couple of months to kick in. Im down to a half dose after 12 months but the second I forget a dose back comes the bitter taste in the mouth which is the precursor to all the other side effects. On natural cures and accupuncture if anyone had a method that worked they would be multi millionares overnight, so best not to waste your money. I go for natural every time but in this case zero joy. Just a point on ALA - be careful of dose if you have thyroid problems. Best taken under medical supervision but so far as I could research no one has fied from it.

      My tip earlier that adjusting the time "works" - to a degree - for me!  Not the gush of old [remember teenage?] but certainly a few drops ...

      TURP - well maybe - but impotence may well follow which at least TH does not give you.  You seem to have got all the side effects which must be rotten but I have been on TH for a year now with very few.

      The odd thing is that I never needed to get up to go to the toilet in the past [save possibly after massive drinking]

      Hi Rex - my experiences and research certainly do not mirror yours!  I quote "Following intravenous or oral administration of an immediate-release formulation, the elimination half-life of tamsulosin hydrochloride in plasma ranged from 5 to 7 hours. Because of absorption rate-controlled pharmacokinetics with FLOMAX capsules, the apparent half-life of tamsulosin hydrochloride is approximately 9 to 13 hours in healthy volunteers and 14 to 15 hours in the target population."  - I usually take TH in the morning so that when I wake next morning urination is less effective though having taken the TH it returns to normal within an hour.  I left my tablets at home once when way and regretted it.  Very poor urination so I bought some over the counter [though why anyone would self prescribe beats me].  I have no problems with erections [certainly not priaprism mentioned above] and if I do plan to ejaculate [one way or another] delaying the tablet works for me.  I never need to get up to wee in the night.  It's subjective and my memory may be at fault of course but I seem to have much more intense orgasms!    TH suits me anyway.
