Tamsulosin side effect not documented

I commenced tamsulosin treatment last week for BPH symptom. I am 62.

I have already noticed an increase in flow which is good, but still struggle with dizziness if I stand up too quickly after sitting for a while. Does this symptom get better over time?

I have noticed something else since starting this drug, and it is not mentioned in the product insert. My flaccid penis is longer and thicker than it was before the tamsulosin treatment .

I noticed it on day one, but did not really give it much thought. Next day, and subsequent days when I look in the mirror before my shower I am thrilled to have this happen to me. There is no change to erect size that I have noticed. I hope this is a permanent feature of my treatment for BPH. It is not always great getting old, but a larger hang brings a smile to my face each morning. Cant wait for the Lockdown to finish and show off my new package in the gym changing room!

Has anybody else noticed this?

When I started taking tamsulosin many years ago I felt slightly light headed - a common side effect, as it may lower your blood pressure a bit. I quickly adjusted to this feeling and have not had side effects since. The penis size issue isn't something I have ever heard of. As tamsulosin relaxes certain muscles perhaps there is more blood flow going on - just a guess.

I'm pretty sure all the alpha-blockers, of which tamulosin is just one, have similar blood pressure effects. I was on doxazosin for several years and for me, the slight dizziness from standing up too quickly either went away over time or I got used to it and sub-consciously adjusted. Whatever the reason, for me the relief I got was worth tolerating that side-effect. You could ask your doctor to try a different alpha-blocker to see if reduces the dizziness.

you will likely get RE with Flomax/Tamsulosi, switch to Alfuzosin for less side effects

I'm glad some one else has reported this. I was amazed when I noticed that very same side effect!

Anyone noticed this medicine can cause diahorrea as a side effect too?

Dizziness is a well known and documented side effect of tamsulosin and has been for many years.

I was prescribed Alpha Blockers 4mg a day (Flomaxtra then Prazosin) 2006 to 2015 for BPH. They were supposed to need an increase above the 4mg after 2 years but nobody had done the research so when I asked for an increase I was prescribed Duodart (Dutasteride + Flomaxtra 4mg) on top of 4mg Prazosin 2013/14. Somehow they had doubled the alpha blocker they had refused to prescribe through any increase in Prazosin. In 2015 I was MRI/Biopsy diagnosed with 3+4 PCA. There was also at that time some suspicion Duodart’s Dutasteride increased the chance of serious Cancer but I was never made aware of this before RP. Though my surgeon was an expert in robot assisted procedure the equipment was not available in my city for years after my surgery. I still suffer pretty severe incontinence. This and other post surgery complications are not currently prevalent with other surgeries by the same urologist, with robot assistance. I suspect either the years of relaxing smooth muscles at bladder neck, the year of double alpha blocking or the lack of robot assistance is the result of my 5 years of inconvenience, embarrassment, infections, blockages, self catheterizing and the rest. If I had my time over I would have checked out why medication was considered better than surgery (TURP) for my BPH. I was not aware of any increase in size ahead of surgery but the shortening of urethra during surgery decreases it substantially post RP and erections become a thing of the past. So check out all your options.BarrieHeslop

After yesterdays post I felt more information was required. Before any new drug is allowed to be marketed extensive regulated testing is enforced. This is supervised by the country’s health bureaucrats and agreed Consumer and Product Information is issued to prospective users and health professionals. Unfortunately patients do not read or fully examine the CMIs they are issued or report other side effects to the appropriate body. I recall dizziness was a main side effect for the various alpha-blockers.

In Australia the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) branch of Federal Health is the controlling body in this regard. Unfortunately there is no organised feed-back of the adversities of post issue medications. There is an Adverse Event Database and for Duodart there were a handful of “Prostate Cancer” entries in this database. Initially TGA advised that all these entries were supplier initiated but later this somehow became a privacy issue. There was no provision for Gleason score, the most important label for PC. This omission was explained as an international format problem. The TGA’s data was poorly constructed and there was apparently no attempt to include actual urologist outcomes in the data collection. Cancer was not listed as a side effect but was discounted elsewhere in the CMI. I suspect from the lack of any class action since that PC may not be relevant in Duodart’s adversities but I did not need it and any cancer risk would have been enough to deter me from its use.

All drug controllers take excessive care in the introduction of new drugs but not so much afterwards. Perhaps this is more to do with legal ramifications than medical care. All medications have side effects and we have to consider a benefits vs adversity risk before any use. With BPH in Australia options were very limited for me but other nations appeared to have many more alternative treatments. A great deal of patient research is necessary as healthcare professionals have their own barrow to push. A high percentage of men develop BPH issues as they age. If we live long enough we will likely all suffer Prostate Cancer. Therefore it is a must to look beyond BPH and assess the post cancer life we want. Medications that alter body functions to enhance BPH life may vastly diminish life post RP. Barrie Heslop

Hi, I'm 74 and had Tamsulosin 0.4mg, together with a natural product Prosta Urgenin 370mg, prescribed some 6 weeks ago following a Urine Retention issue. I take the Prosta UrgeninI in the morning and the Tamsulosin in the evening.

I also noticed almost immediately that the flaccid length and girth increased (or returned to their much earlier size for maybe for 10 years ago) dimensions, which is very pleasing to see each day. I have also noticed that it has had no effect on the erect size of my penis.

My urine voiding has also returned to the stronger and larger quantity level that I had for maybe 10 years ago. I have not experienced any negative side effects, except possibly that ejaculating takes longer. So all in all, I'm very pleased with what my Urologist prescribed.

@Guest, hello Mr. Wonderful, sounds like the WHOLE package. Alas, I was NOT fortunate as you all or endowed. Will say, however, that as time goes on, tamsulosin effects will vane. Then, go to .8 mg/a day.. This after more than 5 years using, as it seems to me much more attractive than surgery for BPH. Then over year ago, on one of many trips to toilet, I PASSED out, fell to floor, miracle, did not hit my nocken on walls, sink or toilet. One and only time it ever happenned I am now on 50mg Myrbetriq + .4mg Tamsulosin. Keep UP the good thing

Yes, same as you, I noticed the increased flaccid length (1"+ increase in length) and girth, the very next day after I started using .4 mg Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Flomax) this week. I am 60 yrs old, very fit, and have only used Tamsulosin twice (brand new RX this week - prescribed to curtail frequent (3 times) night-time urination ). As far as side effects, I have noticed nasal/ear congestion the past couple days, as well as taking longer to climax. (I see no difference in erect penis length/girth, but increasing flaccid length is a big deal for me). Reduced amount of ejaculate seems to be a side effect as well (a side effect I also experience with Finasteride to prevent hair loss, which works great). Hopefully, the "reduced ejaculate" will subside, as it had already decreased significantly since I started using Finasteride several years ago. Today's posting date is 11/13/2022.

Late 50's, was concerned for possible sexual side effects and of course anything else negative. Very first day using Flomax 0.4 was happy to see my penis hanging a good deal longer and after a month is definitely larger when erect. Okay, I should say that over the last few years erect penis length has noticeably reduced from 6 inches down to about 5 due to very long standing digestive issues of lack of stomach acidity in which I must supplement that food is better digested, an unhealthy stomach has a dramatic cascade effect! Anyways, am pleased with the overall effect of Flomax and surprise benefit of allowing my penis to return to previous lengths, erections remain normal hard firm as well. Do notice reduction and semen quantity and some reduced intensity upon orgasm. In time I wish to instead take natural supplements to shrink the prostate rather than be using Flomax.
