Tapering Gabapentin

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi - I’ve been on Gabapentin 300 x 1 daily for around three years - 2 months ago I was put on 300 x 3 times daily following knee replacement surgery.

I’ve seen my gp today to discuss coming off the drug and he’s suggested a taper of 100 mg per week over a period of 9 weeks, I admit to being slightly fearful that this seems a little hurried considering I’ve been taking it over 3 years albeit only on the higher dose intermittently - I’d be grateful for any advice on how to look after myself during this process.  Many thanks

Hi Susan, I was put on gaba about 4 months ago, max dose was 100mg 3x a day. Tapered myself off after 3 months on it, did that within a week and have withdrawals still. Day 23 off the med today. I would go super slow, side effects of stopping are rough. I see others have posted about slow tapering, their posts maybe of more help than mine. I wish you all the very best.

Hi - thank you so much for getting back to me - and for your good wishes, I tried getting off this three years ago, the best I managed was to get down to the 300 mg at bedtime - I’m hoping this time I can have more success as I haven’t been on the post surgery larger dose for such a length of time.

Thank you so much for replying to me, I wish you well in your journey x

It is working for me. It took about 5 weeks to get down 100mg.

?I've been on it since 2002. Just go down slowly and you can keep most bad side effects at bay.

Sorry Mary, but I have been off line for some time.

I started to taper by going down 100 mg one day a week. The following week go down 2 days( non consecutive); the third week go down 3 days, and continue like this until you taking lower dose every day of week. Stay that way for two weeks just to stabilize, then start again...It will seem to take forever, but it is worth it doing it like this.
