Tapering of 50mg Sertraline after 6 months - what to expect

Hi, I want to taper of Sertraline. I have been taking it since Dec 1st 2018 and I noticed I started to put on weight. Not more than 10 pounds, but my clothes have already started to feel tighter and no matter how little I eat, the pounds keep creeping up!
My GP said to taper off during a time when 'I have nothing else going on'. But I am working and have an active life.
What would be a good plan? Should I expect to be incapacitated for a few weeks, as in not able to go to work? I have an office job, pretty intellectually demanding and I can't afford to miss work too much but I also do not want to keep gaining weight 😦

hi
i habe been on zoloft sinve 2017 and i have put on about 10 pounds also . i workout alot so it my be due to that but i have never gained more the 5 pounds before . im thinking also the same about the meds it makes you gain weight . but i have talkin to people and some people have lost weight . depends on you . everyone has a different experiance with this med. your not alone but if your feeling better mentally and the meds are helping you i would stay on and not worry about it . my mental health is more important to me than gaining alittle weight . good luck to you .

Hi Sarah,
Yes if it is guaranteed that you only gain 10 pounds, I think I could deal with that. But seeing a slow increase no matter what I do is awful for me...

Have you spoke to your doctor about maybe changing to a different ssri?
I started sertraline 50mg about last September and have increased to 150mg daily now I have averaged put on about 8lbs a month in this time. the doctor says he could try me on another tablet but wants me to try and lose weight with sertraline to save tapering off then back on to like prozac (which could also cause weight gain or weight loss no one knows as we are all different)
I suffered really bad stopped working, socialising, going out etc and for a few weeks even pretty much bed bound I feel better now but my situation hasn't changed other than it not being Christmas. so I fear if I stop/taper I will be back to square 1.
the issue is it becomes a vicious circle. tablets help but weight gain makes clothes tighter so you feel rubbish then if you like me self confidence pulls you down and you think everyone is looking at your man melons or your gut. which makes you want to stay in and so nothing.
i also tried CBT with littke effectand was told to keep taking tablets to mask the problem and then when my issues at home have improves do it again.
I have read people get brain zaps when coming off though and also some a rebound where everything cones right back and in some cases worse
the only person who knows how you feel mentally is yourself. whatever you do speak to tour GP first

Hi Tom,
I will go to my GP next week and tell him I want to wean myself off. The problem is that mid-July I have a lot of travel planned and I don't think anybody can guarantee the side-effects will go away until then 😦

you are correct with regards to side effects, I use diazepam in really stressful situations and it really helped me when I started the sertraline. maybe this is something to ask just for a couple weeks
