Tapering off prednisolone at 5mg

Posted , 14 users are following.

Hi,

Following my previous discussion on trying to taper off prednisone at 5mg - I was thinking of reducing my steriods by 0.5 mg (I feel 1mg is too much of a reduction when tapering down from 5mg) using the Ragnar formula. Has anyone been successful with this procedure when tapering at this level?

kind regards to all affected by the above.

That is exactly the level at which Ragnar needed his approach.

Dear Eileen H and all contributors to this post

Thank you so much for the clarification and feedback - this is very new to me and seems a much better way foward for any of us dealing with trying to taper prednisolone. i was advised by a Dr to reduce my steriods by 1mg of prednisolone per month (I was taking 5mg daily) not suprisingly i didnt suceed and had a lot of pain/inflamation as a result. I subsequently had to increase my steriod intake further due to this. When I asked another medical professional if I should not taper prednisolone by a smaller dose of 0.5 mg I was told no. - that my body wouldnt respond to such a small reduction.

I am grateful to have found this forum as ive been trying to taper off steriods for the past 13 years.

I am sure you are all aware of this but have just bought myself a pill splitter from Amazon for those pesky little 1 mg pills- works a treat !

Hi Ann, I was diagnosed 2 yrs ago with PMR and started on a dose of 15mg of Prednisone. I teetered betweem 6 & 7 mg for a long time - I just couldn't achieve the 6mg!

i had reduced by 1 mg each month until I got to 5 mg. (of course that is going up and down like a yo-yo!)

To reduce lower than 5 mg I was reducing by 0.5 mg a month which doesn't seem like alot but my body felt that 1 mg was too much. Now today I am down to 1 mg!! Heres to hoping it NEVER returns...

    Good luck!

    Thank you very

much for your feedback which is so encouraging to all of us who are trying to taper off prednisolone - esp once we get down to the 5mg level. Ive just been on the DSNS method for a couple of weeks but definately only reducing by 0.5 mg. Well done in getting down to Img - it gives hope to us all.
