tears over dental abscess

Hi

This is my 2nd abscess in three weeks. I had two teeth extracted last week after the first abscess. This time is worse - this is day 3 on antibiotics -my face is still swollen and the abscess seems to be moving around my mouth. I am sitting here sobbing! I feel exhausted and depressed. I have already lost about half of my teeth and wear partial dentures (which I can't get in my mouth at the moment!). I'm 54 and have had gum disease for ages, see the hygenist regularly, brush and floss etc. Am I just going to keep getting abscess after abscess until all my teeth are out? I've seen an alternative organic toothpaste advertised on the web. Has anyone tried anything like this?

    Hi Sarah

Oh poor you ..... it's just not fair is it sad I am afraid with teeth some of us have just drawn the short straw! It sounds as if you have always done everything you should have oral hygiene-wise ..... which makes things even more unfair. Gum disease is often hereditary .... and of course this leads to decay and subsequent abcesses.

Hopefully the antibiotics will soon kick in ...... if not, do see your dentist again. I'm slightly concerned that the infection wasn't under control when you had the two teeth extracted last week ..... this can lead to a spread of the infection to other areas :? Maybe discuss this with your dentist when you next see him.

Once an abscess has been cleared by antibiotics a certain amount of debris is left behind and this has to be cleared - either by root canal work if the dentist thinks the tooth can be saved, or by extraction - which sadly you have to have

I haven't heard of the organic toothpaste that you are talking about. I did notice very recently that a brand (Sensodyne, I think) have brought out a paste especially for gum hygiene. It might also be worth your while using a daily fluoride mouthwash - this was recommended to me by my dentist.

Do hope things settle soon. I've had lots of problems with my wretched teeth over the years so I can understand your misery. I'm just so lucky to have been able to afford to have mine reconstructed with implants and crowns ....... but it has cost me an arm and a leg  and made a big hole in my savings.

Good luck ...... guess where I am off to today ....... the dentist

    Hi Katie

Thank you for your words of comfort! Its really so good and so informative to read other people's experiences of the same thing. Today, in less pain, I can see the bigger picture which is that if I only have teeth problems to contend with in my life, I will have been extremely lucky. But when you're going through the pain of an abscess - its literally all you can see or think about! Thank you. I am off to see the dentist again.
