TECHNIS SYMFONY MULTIFOCAL LENS IMPLANT COMPLICATIONS

Posted , 7 users are following.

I had the Technis Symfony multifocal lens implanted in my dominant eye on 11/09/17 and the very next morning was seeing 20/20 on a reading chart. My up close vision was GRAND. I had a Technis Toric multifocal lens implanted in my non dominant eye on 11/20/2017 and the next morning I was seeing 20/100 out of that eye. Combined  I have good up close and terrible vision at all other distances. The Dr. said be patient and let the lens settle in. Has anyone else had this experience and how long did it take to "settle in" my next apt is 3 weeks away and I am growing less patient daily.

Not a mutifocal, but I had a Tecnis toric monofocal IOL implanted in my right eye 6 weeks ago.

The rest of the day of surgery the right eye was super blurry, so probably 20/100 or worse.

The next day it was a little better about 20/40-20/50.

Over the next 4 weeks I had some days where I awoke and the right eye vision was very blurry again probably near 20/100, but other days where it improved up to 20/25. But it was quite unstable those first few weeks after the surgery.

Only in the past two weeks after I was allowed to stop the steroid and NSAID eyedrops, has my right eye vision been getting more stable and its improved to 20/20 or even better in the morning many days like today. So indeed for some people like me apparently it can take weeks or even months for the eye to heal and to get the best vision.

Of course before the surgery I had read many people's results where they got 20/20 the first day, but I've learned thats not always the case and some of us have to be patient for a month or more.

Thanks for responding. Like you, I had grand expectations of 20/20 the morning after. It is reassuring to hear that I am not the only one with out immediate results. I have another 2  weeks on the drops so maybe after that I'll get better results.

With great respect to your Dr.,  perhaps a second medical opinion is in order.

After my 1 month visit if I have not seen any improvement and get the same response from my surgeon, I must agree and will most likely seek a second opinion.

Scott - are your lenses both Symfony- one regular and one toric?

I have regular Symfony in Beijing th eyes and have good distance intermediate and near vision.

If I understand your post - it is the toric lens that is causing more difficulty?  Sometimes the toric lens rotates do you’ll want to ask your surgeon to check it.  If it has it could be reason for vision not being great.  Doc can either rotate it back or you can get lasik.

Hopefully it just needs a bit more time to heal.

I have a symphony in my dominate eye and a Toric in the other eye. At the 1 week visit the eye was dilated and had not rotated and he said all looked good. I guess I need to try and be patient until my next visit in 2 weeks

Yes hoping it improves in coming days/weeks.  I gather the regular Symfony is giving you better sight than toric.  Perhaps toric lenses take more time.

So true with my nondominant eye; the Symfony toric was found rotate on center 30 degrees about one month after surgery.  2nd time to rotate it back in place got the blurriness gone.  Scott, please make sure your doctor dilates the pupils, so Dr. can observe whether the lens clocked or not.  My eyes didn't settle until after I finished the NSAID and Steroid drops.

I have the same experience with my right eye (Tecnis toric monofocal IOL) now 6.5 weeks after cataract surgery.

My right eye didn't settle until after I finished the NSAID and Steroid drops at about the 4 week point. Vision has been much more stable and improved from that point till now.

If the vision hasn't improved by the time of your next doctor appointment around the 4 week point, request they do a refraction to find out where the eye is at, power and astigmatism.

If there is too much residual astigmatism, then request a dilated exam where the doctor can check if the toric IOL has rotated too much. They can look for special marks on the toric IOL that let them see what the axis angle vs what it was supposed to be. Should be within a few degrees of the target.

I heard the same story from my dr.  It's been 7 months and my close up vision is ok but my distance  vision is not good.  I don't know how long I need to be patient.  I play tennis and it's really has changed the way I see the ball.  Depth perception is off and I see halos day (especially cars with LED lights) and night.  I did not want any lens that would mess up my tennis and was guaranteed the multifocal was perfect.  Needless to say I am disappointed and unfortunately the lens cannot be removed and replaced.  I complained to the doctor and she lasered it and once that (laser) is done it's risky to remove the implant.  I went to a large medical center for my second implant but they had to put a lens in that would compliment the first...depth perception still bad.  First lens was in my dominant eye.

How unfortunate Susie.   Why would a doctor be so quick laser?   I thought that was only for PCO not glare.

Did doctor even advise you before the laser procedure that it would prevent you from a lens exchange?

I don’t think when a person selects multifocal that the result is you can only see near.  Is it possible the measurements were off and the right power wasn’t implanted?  I also think having the power off creates more halos and glare too.  For multifocals or EDOF lenses to work the power has to be spot on.

I had my 30 day follow up on 11/19/2017. My right eye has inproved, i can see the 20/25 line however it is still very blurry. The Dr check the lens and it has not rotated and there are not other poblems. I will admit that I see better on the eye chart but i dont think I see better in the real world. It's like looking thru someone else's glasses, it make me nauseous and gives me constant headachs. I do have days that it seems like my vision is better only to get worse again by end of day. When in very bright lights or looking at a computer screen  I experiance a shutter sensation similar to a slow moving movie frame (if that makes sense) I have found that the dimmer the light the less bothersome, but with less light I cant see as well up close. Up close by the way is still terriffic. I was instructed to continue the drops until gone and will have another follow up in February. My Dr assures me that it will get better, i just pray it happens sooner than later.

    Hello,

the Dr ophthalmologist would not provide me a refraction after the 2 month checkup.  Subsequent refraction at the optometrist DO provided me a .25 diopter cylinder (residual astigmatism).  New eyeglass correction is much much clearer now.

Yes, my toric Symfony did not correct 100%, but I can tolerate no glasses for PC monitor work, maybe couple of hours.

Please finish the eye-drop RX, then get your eyes refraction checked to see if any residual refractive errors remain.
