I have followed the others with their experience. and I was hoping to feel better by now. I had my first eye done almost 6 month ago and the second 4 weeks later. Near vision is not a big problem but intermediate and far seeing is still horrible. It's very blurry and i am wearing yellow polarized sun glasses while driving. Light sensitivity and halos are very bad. And i still can see the outer contours of the lenses. According to my doctor my vision is 20/20?? I am at a point to replace the lenses even I paid out of my pocket. I was hoping it'll get better with time but it did not.

      Hi barbara337,

I'm so sorry you're going through this! In my case, the effects of night vision didn't affect me much, even though the dysphotopsias of Synergy(RE) are greater than those of Symfony(LE). I don't think I've ever had much sensitivity to light, whenever I go out on sunny days, my sunglasses stay on my head adorning my forehead. The only thing that has worried me is this variation between a clear and blurred vision, but this occurs at all distances.

Have you had a refraction test of your eyes? They ask which is better, 1 or 2, and the end result is an eyeglass prescription for sphere and cylinder in diopters. That is usually the best measure of your distance vision, and can give you a good indication what the issue is with distance vision.

Hi Barbara - sorry you are experiencing these issues and do hope things improve with a bit more time. Healing not the same for everyone and we react differently to the post surgery drops. Thus could why fluctuations in vision.

Give it 6 weeks - that is usual time for complete healing (barring any complications). Do recommend at 6 weeks you see your regular optometrist for an exact prescription. The IOLs come in diopters of .50 vs .25 like glasses so it is always possible that exact prescription can't be achieved or you may have some astigmatism - all if which can be corrected with glasses.

      Hi Barbara

20/20 vision is at the length of the optometrist's office, not at 500 yards - so while it is a medical definition, it doesn't really help if your sight is telling you otherwise. My optometrist took me outside to try a couple of lenses to see what worked for me - and then they made up a set of glasses to that prescription to show what the result of laser correction would bring. I have the glasses and distance vision is very much improved and driving in daylight is almost as before. Close vision is still amazing, with and without the glasses. I will wait a few weeks to be 100% sure before committing to the laser retouch. And then, I need confirmation from the clinic that the laser "retouch" would bring the same results as the glasses give. Hope this helps.

how is your computer distance vision?

when you say near vision is amazing are the videos on your phone HD quality? how about clarity for shaving without enlarged mirror?

I can read the smallest print on jars and plastic bottles, e.g. chemical contents lists on shampoo etc. with ease. Computer and mobile phone vision are superb. My newspaper reading vision is good from from about 15cms (6") to about 45cms (2ft 6") no problem. Shaving is easier without a magnifying mirror...just a standard one is fine. Equally good in daylight and low level restaurant lighting too...so reading menus is a joy. Just need to get my distance sorted.

Perhaps this article which can be found by googling the information below has been identified before, but just in case.... In skimming through the article I made note of a few things. One is that in general the weakness of the Synergy seems to be the distance vision. It was reported that those that had very good distance vision before surgery were most likely to report poor distance vision. Some surgeons are actually only using the Synergy in one eye with a monofocal in the other eye to compensate for it. Others are explanting one lens and replacing it with a monofocal. But, that said, the comment was made by one surgeon that the explant rate was 1 in 400, which is not very high.

But keep in mind while these are experts, they are just their opinions, and the article was sponsored by J&J.

I confess that I had already read this 2021 article and, in addition to all the information I got from you, rwbil and other members of this forum, it was of some importance for my second eye's choice of Synergy. The answers given by specialist surgeons in relation to the results obtained with their patients make it clear that distance vision is far from being the highlight of this IOL. Its real highlight is in the near and intermediate vision, in the continuous vision without focal points and its low light loss with less loss of contrast. Which were important points for me, and which I can confirm today. As I already had Symfony in my dominant eye for almost 4 months and was satisfied with my distance vision with it, I decided to take a chance.
