TED stockings

I am having my THR on Thursday.  At the "hip school" we were told that we had to use the TED stockings for 6 weeks.  A friend who had the same operation at the same hospital as me (Wrightington) said that his consultant had told him that with the daily injections the TED stockings were now redundant but that for some reason they kept saying use them even though they were not necessary.

Has anyone ese been told the same or else told that they did not need to use them?  Did any of you discard them regardless of what you were told.

Thanks

I wore Ted's every day for six weeks changing them only to shower, I had a daily Rivaroxaban also for 6 weeks, there,s so much conflicting advice around but I think you can only listen to your surgeon when you have not been through it before, six weeks is not forever, hope this helps.susybobs x

It sounds as if I won't be able to take them off as I don't have anyone to help me put them back on.

I,m sure you can get different aids to help with putting them on &off think someone on this site could help you with that x

I am similarly hampered, I just shower with them on, dry off as well as I can, then get the hairdryer out to finish them off.

    Hi Thursday Next..

I too am having a THR on Thursday! It is my second, and I'll admit that I've never even heard of TED stockings. They've never been mentioned...not once... by anyone.... I don't even know what they are. I certainly didn't have them for my first (perhaps things are different in Canada??). I am however lined up for 28 days of self-injections.

Best of luck to you on Thursday!

      Hey Jordan,

Actually we do have TEDS here in Canada. It just depends on your surgeon and what type of precautions for blood clots they use. I'm in Ontario, where abouts are you?

      Hi Canadan Girl,

greetings from Exeter England...a no TEDS, no injections, but 24 hour auto pumps in hospital and junior asprin daily land. So stange this lack of evidence based practice worldwide.

We are cloudy and dull here, with occasional bright days with lovely colours in the trees. winter is coming...

      Heal well

      HI Canadian Girl!

I'm in BC. I'm only being given injectables. Interesting to know about the TEDS though. I'm going for hip #2 tomorrow and had never heard of them!

      Thanks.

Thank you! Looking forward to having it done. I've been lurching around with a leg length discrepancy since my first THR a year ago. Fingers crossed that I end up balanced! wink

    Hi Thursday Next

I am nearly 5 weeks post op of my 2nd THR this year (first one January) and have been on this site all this year. One thing that amazes me is the differences not only between hospitals but also surgeons in their approach to patient recuperation. I know there are different types of operations which may be a factor but you would think that say all posterior approach ops would have the same basic rules and meds post op.

I havent researched this but I am assuming the surgeons instructions etc are evidence based? So why do some insist on TED stockings for instance and others dont as well as prescribing blood thinners ( tablets / injections /aspirin). Is it a belt and braces thing?

I am def going to ask my surgeon when I have my check up in a couple of weeks. Im not saying I would risk not following advice just wondering why its  so different!

Best of luck to you for Thursday 😀

I suffer from an inflammatory skin condition and refuse to wear Teds. As a nurse, I know how useful they were before the routine use of anti-coagulants came into being, but they have become redundant.  As long as you do plenty of leg exercises and get walking ASAP and keep up the injections, you should be safe.  No guarantees though!

I am 6months post THR and Thank God, I,ve sailed through it with no problems.  I did the minimum physio and slept on my good side from day one.  Best of luck!

I am two weeks post THR and going to see my consultant today so will ask him how essential they are. I have had my TED stockings on since the op and daily blood thining injections. The stockings are driving me crazy and don't seem to offer much, they are so tight, they actually cause more pain I think. Apparently they have to stay on for 6 weeks....!
