Teenage daughter has been diagnosed with UC too?

Hello, I have had UC for nearly 20yrs. I have made a few posts asking and receiving great advice from the community here, but this time I need help for my daughter. She is 15 and is having her first UC flare up, I was devastating by her diagnosis although I know that it isn't my fault! Her only point of reference is me, I am old, relatively, and my experience of colitis has been grim to say the least. She really needs people of her own age to talk too about this not just me. I can give her all the support a mother can and have the advantage of knowing a lot more about colitis than many GPS. But teenagers need to talk things out with their peers, her friends support her but as she said they really don't understand what it's really like. She is worried that other teens will be more I'll than she is and will dismiss her. She is doing mocks at the moment but going to the loo during exams is only increasing globally her anxiety. She is using foam enemas and mesalazine but her symptoms are getting worse. I am in contact with the paediatric gastrointestinal team but wondered if any of you have teens who would be willing to chat via email or know of support groups that I can contact. Colitis is horrendous, but it is so much harder to take when it affects my daughter.

    Hi Alison,

Sorry to hear that your daughter is suffering. I'm in my late 20s now but had UC for 8 years.

I'd be happy to help answer some of her questions.

I'm also the founder of an IBD community called IBDrelief. I'm sure I could put her in touch with some of our younger members if she wished.

    All the best.

      Hi Seb

I have just been looking at your site, much friendlier than the NACC site which is very dry. It would expect great if you could help me put her in touch with other young people. She is beginning to realise that even though I am her mum, it's a long time since I was a teenager, I don't quite have the mindset she needs just now. I have shown here the site, any help would be greatly appreciated. Alison
