Teenager with CFS

Hi All , my teenager has recently been diagnosed with CFS after months of illness. The continuous headache seems to be the biggest problem and over the counter remedies don't touch it. We have tried amitriptyline but after just 3 days her physical symptoms got much worse so stopped taking it. The symptoms have reduced but now walking is much more painful than before. Managing to attend school three mornings with the help of sunglasses and ear plugs but does get sent home quite often when the headache becomes unbearable. Anyone else out there with a teenager who has a tried and tested remedy that might work. Not due to see consultant again until May.

Have you thought about acupuncture? If your daughter is having severe headaches, you might take her to a neurologist sooner than May. If she's having migraines, for instance, there are many drugs to try. I've used Imitrex in the inhaled form. You can also get Imitrex shots, which act quicker. If it's a migraine, it's important to take the drug right away, before the headache takes hold.

Hi Jackie, several people have suggested acupunture including my neighbour who had ME for over 4 years and it helped them but my teens not keen on it in fact greeted by a big fat NO when i suggested we look into it. Not keen on being poked and proded any more after months of tests and visits to GP and hospitals. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Hi, my son is 22yrs and as had cfs since 2012 following a serious rtc with a drunk driver he used to suffer with horrendous headaches at the beginning but I started him on feverfew tablets from the health food store up to 3 daily and within a week they had subsided I kept him on this dose for a month and gradually reduced them to one in a morning his headaches are few and far between now. My sons twin started with migraine in January this year he took them for just over a month he's ad no migraine since.

Hi Susie, the GP and Consultant have said it is not migraine as the headache never goes away, just gets worse and not on and off like migraine can be. I will give feverfew a try as your sons seems to have had a positive results with them. The headache has been ever preasent since Oct last year, time for a new management plan for it then we can tackle other issues. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just wanted to mention that before undergoing acupuncture, I had an extreme fear of needles. In my case, illness and pain eventually trumped fear. It turned out that the needles used in acupuncture are so very thin that I didn't feel them.
