Hi everyone. I've not yet had my op but got listed for it in and 19 weeks time. I've read the leaflets they've given me so far but not read anything on them 're teeth. I keep seeing this referenced on here . Do some insist you get a check up pre op ? My next dental appt isn't due till after when I'm expecting to have my op. Is there a timescale after the op you can't have any dental work done ?? My dentist is a bit hard to change appts with .

The for any answers Julie.

Its I'm case any teeth get broke whilst in theatre with mouth piece for

No that's not why. It's because of the increased risk of developing a prosthetic joint infection within the first year.

Teeth and gums should be checked for any signs of infection ! clearly the last thing you need is an infection which can effect your new hip !

    Hi Julie!

in my experience it was because if you have dental work done in a close time frame of having had hip replacement you would need to be on antibiotics before having dental procedures due to a high risk of infection getting in your blood stream i had both hips replaced and needed to be on antibiotics for my dental cleaning after my first replacement and i had an extraction after my second i didnt get any infections thank goodness. If you have any more questions just let me know.

    Good Luck to you

I recommend that you do what I dud, which was to request an exam and cleaning prior to the hip surgery. If the dentist is not sympathetic and cooperative, get a new dentist.

My surgeon did not want me to have a dental appointment too soon after surgery. There is always a risk of infection for the healing of the new hip. I waited until 6 months after just to be safe. He also wants me to always take premeds (antibiotics) before any dental procedure. I have read that it isn't always necessary according to the American Dental Association.

      Agree

Antibiotic Prophylaxis Prior to Dental ProceduresKey PointsCompared with previous recommendations, there are currently relatively few patient subpopulations for whom antibiotic prophylaxis may be indicated prior to certain dental procedures. In patients with prosthetic joint implants, a January 2015 ADA clinical practice guideline, based on a 2014 systematic review states, “In general, for patients with prosthetic joint implants, prophylactic antibiotics are not recommended prior to dental procedures to prevent prosthetic joint infection.”According to the ADA Chairside Guide, for patients with a history of complications associated with their joint replacement surgery who are undergoing dental procedures that include gingival manipulation or mucosal incision, prophylactic antibiotics should only be considered after consultation with the patient and orthopedic surgeon; in cases where antibiotics are deemed necessary, it is most appropriate that the orthopedic surgeon recommend the appropriate antibiotic regimen and, when reasonable, write the prescription

Hi. Yes all the recent papers /medical articles I can find suggest it's not necessary to have prophalatic antibiotics prior to dental treatment for joint replacements and surgery. They're also saying altho the oral cavity is full of bacteria it's not generally the type found in joint replacements when it occurs as that's more often staph aureus from the skin. Because of the fear ( and rightly ) of over prescribing of antibiotics and the fear of increased resistance many Drs and Dentists no longer automatically prescribe them prophylactic but only for known infection when bacteria is identified. This seems to be adopted by some Drs and not others. I'll wait for my pre op to find out I think and get my routine check up a bit earlier than what it's arranged for.

      Thx everyone for your replies

Is this a non UK requirement as I visited my dentist 4 weeks after my op and he was only interested in how the op went and how i was progressing. Nothing at all was mentioned connecting the two and my surgeon didnt mention it before or after. Other than did I have false teeth which is clearly a requirement of what is lose on your body whilst in theatre.

I'm in Derbyshire UK. But I suspect it varies from country to country. I'm suspecting antibiotic resistance has something to do with the changes ( everyone's reluctant to prescribe abx unless infection dictates) plus the researchers will be able to look back and see who/when/ what infection if there's a problem. I'm assuming all this sort of thing gets collated for the Hip study they ask you to enrol on.

I'm in Derbyshire too and had my THR last Saturday. Home Monday. Everything going fine. I live alone and have the same stocking problem and so far just wait until someone calls then they take they off, I have a shower (bliss) and they put them on. Teeth? I was asked by the anesthetist if I had any crowns, bridges, implants and when I'd last been to the dentist. My appointment was for the end of the month so I brought it forward, explaining why and they were very accommodating, including having a filling on the spot as the dentist didn't want me to have to come back because of the op. No hip pain is great, I've had it so long, the rest I can put up with. Good luck when you do have it done.
