I have a constant ache and unfortunately received a lot of dental treatment which has been unnecessary! I have even had a healthy tooth extracted. If it helps at all; in trying to reach a diagnosis it helped me to realise that my pain is never excruciating. With toothache, I believe the pain would have worsened. Luckily a gp suggested trigeminal neuralgia, otherwise I would have lost more teeth. When I googled this condition I didn't appear to have the typical symptoms. My ache is constant and certainly not like electric shock pains or burning. It is an atypical form of facial ache - as far as I can work out. I have been taking amitriptyline for a few months now and I am feeling slightly better. It took a long time to get to the dose of 60mg a day which I feel is helping. I hope you get some relief soon. I keep getting told it will get better. Unfortunately for me I still have dental work to get completed.

I would try to see a neurologist about this and ask about trigeminal neuralgia.  I have it in my jaw and for years thought it was tooth pain.  I started getting electric shock type pain in my jaw and between two teeth.  It got worse and I went to a neurologist.  They give you a drug that calms the nerve down which worked for me for a short while and made me a druggie...hated it so found a TN surgeon in my area who did radiofrequency surgery.  It stopped the pain immediately but only lasted for 7 months so did it again and am now on my 6 th month.  It really gets rid of the pain tho.  Where did you read that it is not permanent.  I thought it was.
