Temporary Tinnitus

I have had tinnitus for 6 weeks 5 days now, and three doctors have told me it will go one hundred percent. Has anyone else been told this before? They say minimum 6-8 weeks, no longer than a year. I'm really struggling to live with this, and I will never accept it if it is permanent. If it is still here in 5 years time I won't be here anymore. It is noise induced by the way: I was listening to music pretty loud with new headphones, FLAC format which means lossless audio, for just under an hour, when the fire alarm went off. I am in uni halls so I have a fire alarm in my room. I could hear the fire alarm whilst the music was still playing directly in my ears. I took off the headphones and went outside. When I came back in I didn't notice the ringing in my ears if it was there. So, I continued to listen to music through my headphones for 20 minutes or so. When I finally decided to go to bed I took the headphones off and straight away noticed the ringing. Having heard it before for a few seconds/minutes after music, I thought nothing of it and assumed it would go in the morning. I woke up, and it was there. I was incredibly anxious and all the rest of it, here I am today, having been told it will go one hundred percent and will last no longer than a year. I should be positive right? but I am not - I can't stop worrying that this is permeant and will be one of those people that has to learn to accept it will be there for life and get on with it. Well, I am not prepared to live with this for the rest of my life, and yes, people do live with MUCH worse i.e. no legs, arms, sight, hearing, etc, but I simply will not live with this if it is permanent. Therefore, I have decided to give it 5 years. The doctors say no longer than 1 year so I shouldn't even consider that but I am just that anxious and it is bothering me that much that this is what is has come to. I know about white noise and trying to keep your mind off of it by keeping busy, I have to sleep with a fan on and the TV and the sound of rain and leave the window open so I can hear the cars on the motorway faintly and not sleeping with my ears against the pillow and trying to get to sleep itself, I'm tired of it. Anyone else been told it will go or anything similar? I'm due at the ENT in 2 months. I'm 19.

Also...if you're giving yourself 5 years, why not give yourself 5 years again when it's up? In other words it's easier to deal with if you think about it in shorter blocks of time (as you're sort of doing) instead of thinking about having to wait 20 years.
Also the other day I read that a medicine has been made that actually regrows the damaged hearing hair follicles in the ear in mice, fixing their hearing after being exposed to loud noise. It takes a long time for these things to get to market for humans but it's good news anyway. You're going to die someday anyway so you might as well wait it out longer and see what happens.

I am 66 and unfortuately I am here to say that I read an article by Dr. Stephens M. Nagler who had this problem as well. It was nice for me to know that a doctor had this problem and described the symptoms in a way that I will never forget.
The sound is not tennitus. It is not comng from the ears. Dr. Nagler described the sound: "It's a teakettle steam sound on jet afterburners." You hear in "In your head" all the time"
I know exactly what you are saying and it would be very difficult for anyone not knowing the symptoms, how it affects you. That is why you get the' 'It is temporary and will go away.' Frankly they either don't seem to understand or care.
Dr. Nagler tried herbs, accupuncture, and medication. Nothing worked. He has a long article and fails for some reason to say if anything did work, at the end of his article.
I have written him a letter. I don't really care about the cause. I have had this many many years. Trust me I heard everything you said and know how you feel.
I am 66.

Has the ringing gotten any better?
I have had tinnitus in both ears about 2 months now and it's upgraded to more of a humming, loud ring 24/7 and is worse than before.
What happened was...
I had an Outer ear infection for several weeks before being given antibiotics. I took my very last dose of them, sat down, looked at my phone and boom i either just noticed or it just suddenly both my ears started ringing. I waited a week or so and it didnt go away. I went back to the doctors and she just said I needed more stuff for my ears. She gave me ear drops.
I took them 3 times a day, still taking them even though my ear infection is probably gone. And she said the ringing should stop with the infection gone but it hasn't...
I'm making an appointment for tuesday to get referred to an audio/ear specialist doctor because I just can hardly handle the ringing.
I hope you have aome relief in yours...

Recently when I had cold and flu, doctor gave a antihistamin for 3 days. So suddenly the tinnitus also stopped. But during the past years different antihistamins did not mske the ringing stop.
Yesterday I listened the music from my ipod with earbud and at night the tinnitus again came back. There is also dizziness when I lay flat on bed to the left side. Therefore I will go again to see the doctor.
