Temporary Tinnitus

I have had tinnitus for 6 weeks 5 days now, and three doctors have told me it will go one hundred percent. Has anyone else been told this before? They say minimum 6-8 weeks, no longer than a year. I'm really struggling to live with this, and I will never accept it if it is permanent. If it is still here in 5 years time I won't be here anymore. It is noise induced by the way: I was listening to music pretty loud with new headphones, FLAC format which means lossless audio, for just under an hour, when the fire alarm went off. I am in uni halls so I have a fire alarm in my room. I could hear the fire alarm whilst the music was still playing directly in my ears. I took off the headphones and went outside. When I came back in I didn't notice the ringing in my ears if it was there. So, I continued to listen to music through my headphones for 20 minutes or so. When I finally decided to go to bed I took the headphones off and straight away noticed the ringing. Having heard it before for a few seconds/minutes after music, I thought nothing of it and assumed it would go in the morning. I woke up, and it was there. I was incredibly anxious and all the rest of it, here I am today, having been told it will go one hundred percent and will last no longer than a year. I should be positive right? but I am not - I can't stop worrying that this is permeant and will be one of those people that has to learn to accept it will be there for life and get on with it. Well, I am not prepared to live with this for the rest of my life, and yes, people do live with MUCH worse i.e. no legs, arms, sight, hearing, etc, but I simply will not live with this if it is permanent. Therefore, I have decided to give it 5 years. The doctors say no longer than 1 year so I shouldn't even consider that but I am just that anxious and it is bothering me that much that this is what is has come to. I know about white noise and trying to keep your mind off of it by keeping busy, I have to sleep with a fan on and the TV and the sound of rain and leave the window open so I can hear the cars on the motorway faintly and not sleeping with my ears against the pillow and trying to get to sleep itself, I'm tired of it. Anyone else been told it will go or anything similar? I'm due at the ENT in 2 months. I'm 19.

John, I know exactly how you feel. Tinnitus is suffering, pure and simple. We might be able to acclimate to it in time, but it will always be there. I sincerely hope the doctors are right and yours goes away. I got my tinnitus after being on a medicine (generic lipitor) for several months, and now that I stopped the medicine, the tinnitus is still there. I'm afraid it might be a permanent condition. You are young and that is on your side. Healing can occur and faster in a a young person. Wish you the best and will pray for your total recovery.

Hello John.  Hopefully, recovered people don't respond to your question because they don't want to be reminded of what they went through (and jinx their recovery by reading these types of threads).

I have done A LOT of research and found if you exercise, keep stress down, and eat well, they tinnitus from a one-time occurrence like a loud rock concert goes away in 6 to 12 months.

It has been a long 3 weeks for me since I decided to cup my ears to hear Angus Young's (AC/DC) guitar solo. I was drunk and thought it was fun to get the extra volume. Man, was I wrong. I now have a high pitch ringing in both ears although 3 different docs said my hearing is fine and it will go away with time.

I stopped searching for the silver bullet cure but still take Ginko and Magnesium. I am able to sleep like a baby thanks to white noise on my iPhone.

Like others here, I have a family and busy business so checking out and getting depressed is not an option. -- Temporary relief comes from outdoor activities, health clubs with background noise, long showers and a Jacuzzi break.

I am hopeful that I will be one of the many who get rid of this and never need to search these threads again.

FUN FACTS:  There are many who come out of wars and recover in 2 to 4 months. -- A friend of mine had it and fully recovered in 6 months. -- Yoga and meditation are known to speed up recovery as well since they relax you.

I will ask what everyone else is wondering: Did you recover?

I developed tinnitus two and half years ago, as a reaction to the medication acitretin for psoriasis. I still have it, but it has improved enormously and I am told it could still go altogether, although I have my doubts. To begin with I felt suicidal; I couldn't even read, couldn't concentrate on anything. But oh so slowly things have improved - I think the brain retrains itself to filter it out, and only succumbs when you're tired or stressed or someone asks you how your tinitus is these days...

Thanks Grimspite. Glad you are doing well. I won't ask you how you are doing in the future.  :-)

I am checking into the "AM-101" treatment/study. Sounds hopeful but I really don't know much. I will keep everyone posted.  Thanks much, John

Stay strong Jeff and, first off, try white noise masking while you sleep along with a prescribed sleep med.

I am reading of new hope with 3% Raw Hemp Oil taken orally via drops under the tongue. I will keep you posted.

I pray over and over and finally thanks to Saint Jude, the Virgin Mary and my lord Jesus the ringing sound is gone! I took last night one of my pills that I've been avoiding just because I knew I could handle my anxiety without pills but last night I said that's it and I took half of my 10mg atarax and I woke up feeling great and the sound is gone!!!! Thank you Lord, Saint Jude and my sweet Virgin Mary. Pray and don't give up
