Temporary Tinnitus

I have had tinnitus for 6 weeks 5 days now, and three doctors have told me it will go one hundred percent. Has anyone else been told this before? They say minimum 6-8 weeks, no longer than a year. I'm really struggling to live with this, and I will never accept it if it is permanent. If it is still here in 5 years time I won't be here anymore. It is noise induced by the way: I was listening to music pretty loud with new headphones, FLAC format which means lossless audio, for just under an hour, when the fire alarm went off. I am in uni halls so I have a fire alarm in my room. I could hear the fire alarm whilst the music was still playing directly in my ears. I took off the headphones and went outside. When I came back in I didn't notice the ringing in my ears if it was there. So, I continued to listen to music through my headphones for 20 minutes or so. When I finally decided to go to bed I took the headphones off and straight away noticed the ringing. Having heard it before for a few seconds/minutes after music, I thought nothing of it and assumed it would go in the morning. I woke up, and it was there. I was incredibly anxious and all the rest of it, here I am today, having been told it will go one hundred percent and will last no longer than a year. I should be positive right? but I am not - I can't stop worrying that this is permeant and will be one of those people that has to learn to accept it will be there for life and get on with it. Well, I am not prepared to live with this for the rest of my life, and yes, people do live with MUCH worse i.e. no legs, arms, sight, hearing, etc, but I simply will not live with this if it is permanent. Therefore, I have decided to give it 5 years. The doctors say no longer than 1 year so I shouldn't even consider that but I am just that anxious and it is bothering me that much that this is what is has come to. I know about white noise and trying to keep your mind off of it by keeping busy, I have to sleep with a fan on and the TV and the sound of rain and leave the window open so I can hear the cars on the motorway faintly and not sleeping with my ears against the pillow and trying to get to sleep itself, I'm tired of it. Anyone else been told it will go or anything similar? I'm due at the ENT in 2 months. I'm 19.

Well... Here I am with on my day 5 with Tinnitus. I'm giving it until next week before I see a doctor. From what I read, there are so many things that can cause T, and many of them apply to me. I've experienced (and still am) a great deal of stress and anxiety due to marital problems and that could've triggered it. I've also experienced some lower back pain, that I know for a fact can be caused by stress,  and took "ALEVE" in a high dosage and that could've caused. I rarely listen to loud music with earphones but last week I did one day, so I don't if that could be the cause of it... Anyway, I'm rarely exposed to loud noise, I love the quiet,  I find it hard to believe that I have it permanently, but who knows? It's been 5 days and it drove me nuts at first but now I don't know if I'm getting used to it or it's getting better..

Does anyone know if in any of the cases listed above it can be permanent? I'm concerned about the "ALEVE" scenario in particular.

BTW John, how's your T? Is it gone completely?

I guess the doctor will tell me something when I go.. I'm 40.

You don't say that you are "Doctor " diagnosed . You could possibly have an ear infection.which are a tad noisy. .My TT is almost 6 years old and

      old, and here  to stay

Both ears now ,bearable during the day,but not so  at bed time. Falling off to sleep is impossible ,so I use a  low dose sleeping tablets ,which, with the help of Radio 4 (no music, just voices )   , send me off.

I know that sleepers are frowned upon, but sleep deprevaton is , or can be serious health problem  .I visit the T clinic every 6 months.

and am given the once over  Having one ear that now feels FULL of sand, will no doubt need some attention, hopefully it is an infection.

Having just had a very severe chest infection, it may be the reason

and the bugs are moving out.

Need to thank the person who gave me a full on sneeze into my face.  .

      What is Aleve ???

Stress is responsible for lots of problems,,, pity it doesn't look like

a spot, then we could squeeze it to death.

your doctor wil probably refer you to the Hearing clinic.

I am only aware of it on rare occasions - long car journeys, first thing in the morning, sometimes, and when someone reminds me of it! But I know it will recede again, so I don't get stressed about it and before long I have forgotten I have it.

OK John. First off..what do you mesn if you have it in five years you wont be here anymore? I hope yiu're not saying what i think you're saying. You made some positive comments regarding what your doctor advised. 6-8 weeks. That give me some hope. I;ve had it for two and a half weeks now. The first week it was nomn stop loud. Scale of 1-10 a 10. Then is dimished over time. I have mostly good days and sometimes 10+ days. I came across this treatment online cammed The Tenitius Termenator. Its a thirty day program and costs 69.00. Whatthe hell worth a try. Maybe it working. They claim 100% cure. If not full refund. I actually look forward to my listening sessions. For best results listen within one hour before bed. What if it goes beyond five years? You're still be here i'm sure. I have a friend who is stage four of cancer treatments. Bet he'd trade with us in a heartbeat. The best cure is to train yourself to ignore it. When you're in your kitchen do you notice the refrigtor or air conditoner? You don't... but you don't care.

    Hi John

I know it's been another 3 years so I'm not sure whether you will get this post.

Just wondering how you doing now and whether there has been any change in the last few years and whether you found anything else that has been helpful along the way.

Any information about your current condition would be most helpful. Thanks and best wishes

It's maybe caused from head injuries , brain damage , drug or alcohol abuse , smoking , stress ,  heat exhaustion , lack of sleep an can be a sign of a small stroke or a sign of a blood vessel ballooning in side the brain the only things you can do to stop the ring sound in your ear's is get a lot of sleep in a cool room an eat omega 3 in a un-processed sauce like raw or smoked salmon or marinated green shell mussels and eat things to stimulate the brain to re-grow new tissue like semi sun dried tomato's , feta cheese , olives and drinking tea a lot to keep your self stimulated .  the ringing or high pinging can also be caused by too much TV or noise an can be caused by being too under stimulated

      Hi Yoli -

I think John's reply is a bit alarming, as sometimes tinnitus occurs for no reason whatsoever, especially in older people who are going slightly deaf. I think it's also important not to blame yourself for it. Mine was a rare reaction to medication for psoriasis, and I've had it for 4 years. It has got a lot easier, as I've learned to distract myself with something else. Once you know that works, it gets easier to do it because you believe it WILL work. I have found gardening a good ploy - doing something in a quiet room is not a good idea, and outdoors you hopefully have the sound of the wind in the trees and the birds singing. Occupying as many of your senses as possible is the key - your hands should be doing something for touch, appreciating the grass and flowers with smell, chewing gum deals with taste, hearing the birds with sound, and looking at your surroundings with sight. Good luck. Some days I only remember I have tinnitus when someone asks me how it is! And then it kicks in big time until I distract myself again.

Hi John has your tinnitus gone away?

Hey. I'm new to this whole Forum thing so I may not be posting correctly. Within a few days of my tinitus starting, which was caused by shooting about 50 rounds with very little ear protection, I got a tone generating app for my phone because I was concerned about not being able to hear certain frequencies. I noticed when I found the frequency that matched the ringing in my ear (usually around 6200Hz), it would make the ringing go away for at least a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes, or at least lessen it. Soon after shooting that day, I realized I had significant hearing loss, which turned out to be temporary, but my right ear sounded like a blown speaker, and I was basically totally messed up in both ears for a couple of days. It scared the crap out of me. The tinnitus was very bad for the first couple of weeks, then I went to an ENT and they cleaned out my ears really well. Removing wax buildup in my right ear helped a lot, because it relieved some of the pressure I was experiencing, and actually made the tinnitus lesson. Since then, the tinnitus has gotten to where I don't notice it most of the time, and sometimes it is completely gone, but it pops back up after either being in a crowded loud restaurant, or a place with any type of Machinery running. It is never nearly as bad as it used to be though. I'm 6 weeks out. I'm hoping in another 6 weeks this nightmare will be over. Try the tone thing. Even a few seconds or minutes of relief is worth it! I will never take my hearing for granted again!

Fingers crossed for you, I hope it fades away with time. If it's typical, you will find it comes and goes, but you get used to it as time goes on.

The trick with the signal generator app on the smartphone works for me too, my frequency is much higher, about 10KHz. I keep it by the bed, and if I can't get to sleep sometimes because of the tinnitus, I fire up the app at about 10Khz - I find it works best if I move it around my head - and I get maybe ten minutes relief, which helps me nod off.

Sometimes, rarely, I get a complete break from it for an hour or two. The slightest thing can trigger it again though, I find sudden noises like clicks and bangs seem to be the worst !

       Anyway, good luck !
