Tender scar

Hi fellow hippies, it is 14 weeks since I had my THR, the scar is still tender to the touch and I still have occasional painful twinges in that area. I don't have pain anywhere else, just in the scar, Is this normal, if so when can I expect it to subside? I am 75 years old.

I was told yesterday by my surgeon on my 6 week check that the internal disolvable stitches take at least 90 days to heal. He said that when my scar, (which is pink now) turns white, it's a sign that it has finally healed.

Sorry I got it wrong and did not send you a message.

Thank you Veronica, my scar is still a little pink, I just keep on hoping it will get better.

Hi Linnet, no I haven't been massaging the scar, will it help? It is too tender for me to sleep on that side.

As soon as my dressings came off. I started massaging oil into my scar, it helped tremendously.

Dear Derek,  What a relief to read your post.  I am almost 15weeks and also have pain on the scar area..quite bad actually and now back on one crutch.  I am despondent as worried that something inside is going wrong as I am worse at the moment than I was at 6 weeks post op.  Will gratefully read your post replies as will help me too.

      Hi Alice

In the main the replies I have received recommend massaging the area; don't know if it will help, but anything is worth a try.

If there is no improvement the only other solution is to make an appointment with the surgeon; but I am reluctant to do this. Next time I see him is April 2016. I hope you see some improvement soon.

Dear Derek,  Thank you I will give it a go.  My consultant said he wouldn't be seeing me again..after the 7 week check..I was surprised and concerned about that.  My GP has just referred me on for physio which I sort of feel I should have ahd before.  I went privately for the op but apart from the benefit of your on room and surgeon you seem to be better off on NHS.  Anyway  as I am back on one crutch the pain is subsiding!! Just want reassurance that what we, I, am experiencing at 14 weeks is normal.

      Good to read the posts.

I don't have pain in my scar, but it was very lumpy although that seems to be improving with time but I think I pulled mine. When I was about 6 weeks ish post op I sat down twisted and kind of pulled it, it did hurt at the time but since then the scar seems wider than before. It had looked like a very thin line that was healing well but now it very much wider and pink. I was quite pleased with the way it was healing, it looked as though it would soon have faded, now I think it will always be quite angry looking sad

Sorry to hear that, At the top of the scar there is a red are but the line itself is only fine and not even pink. It didn't help when I fell on the floor about three weeks ago, I should not have gone outside in my slippers but I did. If the scar line is now wider maybe your GP would take a look and put your mind at ease.

I'm around 13 weeks I think. I get occasional twinges in my scar too and it's sensitive to touch. Sometimes it burns like it did at the beginning too. I have a thin fading line so I'm surprised.

I still have a bit of pain on the hip especially when I first stand up. Nothing like pre op but it's there.

Ow, it's not just me then that occasionally feels something in the scar area .... I assumed it was the internal disolvable stitches which I am told take a while to actually dissolve.

Also, the pain in hip (atually at the top of the leg where the stem goes into the bone) when standing.  Once I get going, it's much reduced.

My scar burns, then itches then goes away, every now and again.  I also feel  a tightnes in my muscle i guess it s because they have woken up after so many years.

Yes, mine was itchy last night ..... very odd how it comes and goes.

Still trying to remember to rub in moisturiser.

      Hi Kikeena

Maybe it is the way we heal, not everyone heals in the same way; or maybe we expect too much too soon. I too have a bit of pain when standing up and limp a bit, but after a few minutes it goes less.

I hope you have improvements very soon.

Ahh. I had internal dissolvable stitches. They certainly give a great scar but maybe also a little sensitivity as the stitches do their thing.

And I agree with the pain, once I get going it's just not there. But as soon as I stand up o can't move

Similar to before the op but obviously much less pain.

Yep - stand, and limp for 2-3 paces, then ok.

I just did a 3.5 mile country walk - all fine, except when I got up off the bar stool at the village pub after a small but very refreshing glass of 'black stuff'.

      I liked this advert ...
