TENSION STITCHES POST OP

Posted , 10 users are following.

I had my op 10 days ago too, had to have my dressing changed yesterday as it was catching on my stitches and was very sore. When the nurse took the big badage off and finaly worked her way through removing all the wadding and gauze, I was horrified to see my foot. She told me the stitches were tension stitches but not sure my foot looked right, all my toes are elevated especially my big too. It feels like they want to ping. Is this normal. It's such an intense feeling and really hard to describe. I have attached a picture. I am due to have my stitches out tomorrow so I am hoping my foot will feel a bit better. The one thing that I did notice was there was very little swelling  [smile]  I am being good and wearing the shoe provided and I have just finished 10 days worth of Diclofenic. Which probably helped. It feels less painful since the dressing was changed but much more uncomfortable. But that's probably because the nurse hasn't padded it out like they did after the surgery. Have attached a before and after pic so you can see what I mean about the stitches. Does it look normal to you? I haven't really had any pain, just discomfort and a horrible burning sensation right where the bunion used to be.

I too am 10 days post op and got my stitches out today.  My foot looked much like yours does. I am quite pleased with the result. Since stitches came out the pain has got much less. I have to wear a plaster cast for another 4 weeks.

Thanks Christine, I don't have a cast but I do have the lovely black shoe lol which I have to wear for a further 4 weeks. I am so looking forward to having my stiches out as I think this will releave the sensation of my toes wanting to ping. How are you feeling in yourself. I keep my foot elevated most of the day but the last two days it has been so uncomfortable with tightness that I just don't know what to do with it.

Gorgeous shoes aren't they. Lady Gaga eat your heart out ;-)

Seriously though, I have been wearing these shoes too after having both of mine done in early September. I followed my surgeon's advice to keep my feet elevated most of the time, especially during the first two weeks, and to wear the shoes whenever standing or walking. I am looking forward to my next check up in November with the hope that I can ditch the shoes.

Patience is the key word with this operation.

Good luck with your operation :-)

It was a relief to have the stitches out, it was very tense and uncomfortable the last couple of days. The plaster cast is not the best I think your special shoe looks a better option. Still keep it elevated as much as possible. Hope you feel better after the stitches are out.

    Hi beanie

Looks a really good result. Once stitches are out that crinkle look in yr skin will relax and flatten out. Surgical scars can take up to a year to mature. Once stitches are out and wound fully healed you can start to massage the scar line with something like bio oil. Check with yr own medical team first though. I had my op 9 days ago and I am walking well on my shoe indoors but need my crutches outside. I elevate above groin level when I am sitting. The pressure when I don't is extremely uncomfortable . Now suffering with itchiness as the feeling returns to my toes. I think we lucky to have shoe as thus helps prevent heel pain. I had left foot done 20 yrs ago lucky to have similar surgery and result is excellent with good flexibility. Remember to do yr prescribed exercises this will help with swelling and return to flexibility. For anyone considering the surgery it is not really painful just uncomfortable and the swelling sensation is the worst thing and feels a bit scary till u get used to it. Elevation in first two weeks combined with walking for short periods using shoe and crutches using anti inflamatories like ibuprofen naproxen or diclifenac are key providing yr Dr thinks u okay to use them. Hope this helps

Thanks everyone. Had my stitches out. Omg has to be the worst pain I've ever haD.  I've had two natural births and no pain relief after a full hysterectomy so I have a great pain threshold. The nurse said they were really tight. But my foot looks great. Very little swelling and no bruising. Feels so much better now. Still fell pressure and nerve pain but such a relief now stitches are gone. Gonna keep on with the diclofenic for a couple more weeks. She wouldn't let me photograph it. Had it redressed and have to leave it on for 4 weeks till my next consultant appointment due to bone alignment. It really is important to follow hospital advice if you want your foot to be ok. wink x

Your stitches look too tight as if they're pulling. I'm not sure what surgery you had but was it Scarf/Aklin Osteotomy the same as I had last June? I was told the swelling could take up to a year to disappear and only then you will be able to wear proper shoes. I'm wearing Homyped sandles having a velcro strap around the heel. Wishing you all the best with your recovery.

    Hello Beanie65

Apolgies for delay in replying. Have been away fr a couple of days in th Not Yorksire Moors area. Twas lovey andawelcom brea.

Your stitches look fine  - if a little untidy. Every surgeon will have different standards of needlecraft I expect. Mine are omewhat neater That said yours look very secure which how they should be. They will tug and pull as the wound heals but this is quite normal.

However,  would be asking about your adjacent toes s they look to me to b curling under. Yu may have hammer toes developing.

I had surgery to correct a hammer toe and the bunion corrected on the big toe next to it last November. All is well and has beensusful.

I have hd bunion correction on 1st October on my other foot  -  there was no hammertoe on this foot, and everything is progressing even better than last time which is excellent.

    Good Luck!

I am experiencing some intense sensations. I get a really bad searing pain across the bridge of my big toe and at the tip of my big toe by the tip of the nail., it's like a tightening sensation then subsides to a pins and needles sensation. It also feels like it is burning. Then I get a very sharp feeling where my bunion used to be. I assmume this is normal. Normal pain killers are not touching it and I did try cocodamol but they made me feel very sick so I didnt take them again. sad

I have just had an operation Friday just gone one my second toe. Don't ask me what it's called coz I don't no. I still have stitches in and get them out next Thursday. I am aloud to walk on it which feels better than to when I'm resting it. I just feel like the stitches are tighting up now as I keep getting throbbing in my foot and there's some dry blood on the dressing. I am going to get the dressing tightened as its now to loose as the swelling has gone down which is causing it to slip now.
