Terbinafine Loss of taste

I had taken terbinafine for about six weeks for a toenail infection when my sense of taste pretty much completely disappeared over the course of 3-4 days. I have a vague salty/bitter taste in my mouth, but nothing tastes of anything....sweet, salt, bitter...all gone. I can put pure sugar on my tongue and not taste a thing. That refreshing zing you get from toothpaste? Gone. Everything tastes grey at best, or just nasty at worst.
The infection responded well to terbinafine - I have about 4mm clear nail now, but I've decided to stop taking it as nothing is worth this cost. I've switched to Loceryl lacquer but I don't even care about the nail anymore. I just desperately want to be able to taste things normally again. I can completely understand how this can cause weight loss and depression. My advice would be to avoide terbinafine.

I took Lamisil for an ongoing toenail problem of several years. After about 6 weeks of medication, everything fell apart as far as eating food. At first I didn't attribute it to medication, my bad and continued it for another week. Food tasted fine in the front of my mouth, but when it was time to swallow... Yuck! I can't describe the terrible putrid taste, other than like what eating a dead animal would taste like. The only solace I have found in 5 weeks is a fruit milkshake from someplace or making one at home with added powdered protein. The bitter taste remains, but a few days ago, it was gone and I ate 5 pieces of bacon and a small slice of pizza. The next day was nothing again. I've lost 20 pounds and almost my mind, trying to pray that depression doesn't get too deep . All social functions center around food! I'm only a lightweight when it comes to eating in general, but miss those 3 boneless wings !! I'm a 56 year old female and plan on contacting the drug company, the FDA and maybe even a lawyer . I will also strongly recommend that my doctors office also, not prescribe the drug, at least not without discussing this terrible side effect . Thanks for any other posts and I'll keep everyone updated. Annette

I am a fellow sufferer and am 3 weeks into the misery of these side effects. I wondered if you are on the mend yet. I am finding life very tough and it is good to hear of positive news..

Hi Janet, How disappointing. I have had to reset my hopes of an end to this. Originally, I was hopeful that I would be back to normal after 6 weeks - but this is looking increasingly unlikely. I am now praying that I can taste by New Year's Eve - roughy 8.5 weeks into this horrific experience.
I was wondering if you had noticed any improvement whatsoever. Every now and then I have a glimmer of taste - but it proves to be fleeting and not consistent. I am, however, starting to get used to the situation and have accepted my lot and am doing my best to force food that is good for me down.
Let me know if and when you notice any change.
good luck!!

What amazing news..so pleased for you.
I would love to hear more about how it came back and also whether you are finding that sweet flavours are the last to come back.
I had a good moment yesterday. I actually enjoyed various foods but today seems to be a step back as food is tasting fairly bland. Like many people on this forum, I am beginning to forget what things taste like and can only hazard a guess as to whether my taste is improving or if I am getting used to flavourless food. I am hesitantly hopeful that things are beginning to get a bit better and that i might be around 30/40% .
Keep me posted on when you are absolutely back to normal.
Very happy to hear from you!!!

I took Terbinafine for less than 2 weeks when my taste went. The first thing i encountered was a mouth full of slime. Everything was coated. Food was awful. I thought the food must contain a load of fat so I threw it away. I forget what it was now, but then everything I ate was the same. Once I discovered it was the terbinafine that caused it I stopped them and then began a 16 week loss of taste life that almost sent me insane! The strange thing for me was, just prior to all of this I had been lamenting ' Father God why did you give humans taste buds? Without them food wouldn't be too nice and I wouldn't be so fat.' I said this prior to seeing my doctor about eczema and his prescribing terbinafine. I bet God knew it would do that to me and he wanted me to see why we he gave us tastebuds! Well I can tell you from the day I finally got my taste back, and how joyous that was, I was so grateful that I had been taught such a lesson because now I really appreciate the taste of every mouthful and bite of food I take.

Hi! Jonathan, I took Daktarn for my toe nail infection one year ago. after two aapplications I lost my taste buds, they just sloughed off and I found myself sucking my tongue. I had ate the top layer off my tongue! Now 12 months later I am just getting my taste back. One good side effect-- I can eat all the good greens that I hated because I cannot taste them. Daktarin maybe the UK's equivalent to Terbinafine. I do not know how to check this out, but side effects for same malady suggests too close for doubt. My lips and togue sweeled up and the Doctor gave me Daktarin oral gell to fix my mouth. I wearilly used this. My lips and tonguewent back to normal but my gums were enflamed. I went to my Dentice and he took out six teeth and told me not to come back to him till my mouth was healed. A year ago now and the gums are healed. The heat in my mouth gradually receeded backwards towards my throat and I had problems with speach. I stop the treatment as it was migrateing ths disease down my throat and I thought if it gets into my lungs then I am a gonner.
Dr. glible agreed with no follow up or apology! Now I am getting a skin itch. It does no showabove the skin but is gradually moving from my ankles to calves then to my waiste then fore arms and now upper arms and has gone round to my back. Terrible itch, guess what my Dr. prescribed, Daktarin! I did not know it was Daktarin, the chemists note was undecipherable, bnut when I got it I took it bach to the Surgery and flung it over the counter. By the way this is after seeing 4 Dr, in the 14 Dr. practice .
I now think that 99% of UK Dr. give the rest a bad name.

Hi Franksie,
I hope your recovery is almost complete. I am 23 days into this miserable experience and find the positive news on this forum so helpful.
I am not experiencing any change yet but have fingers and toes crossed that I might be able to enjoy food by the end of this year. At least I won't need to lose any weight in January...
