terrible pain clinic treatment

Just finished my appointment. He diagnosed me with fibromyalgia, said that he doesn't think that the codeine is going to be effective or the nefopam. Because of my previous addiction problems wont prescribe me anything else, said nothing would help either. Had no other non medication therapies to offer. I asked if he would refer me to accupubture, he said no because it only has a 50% success rate. I asked about heated pool therapy, he said go to the swimming baths, asked about cbt, he said no cause im on the waiting list for DBT. I asked what im supposed to do, he said excercise more and that DBT would help with the mental aspect even though he had never heard of it. I said I wasn't happy and wanted a second opinion, he said he'd refer me internally but id go back on the waiting list and that would probably be another 12 weeks.

Seriously what is the point, what am I supposed to do? I really can't go on like this.

Wow, what a negative doctor!  I have been suffering with chronic back and neck pain for 14 years.  You have to be an advocated for yourself.  You should to to different doctors until you find one with better bed side manor and a better positive outlook.  Take it upon yourself to look into acupuncture, whick has a fantastic success rate for chronic pain.  Try Yoga, eating healthy, try keeping your stress level down.  But, change doctors right away.  You should not be treated like that..Best of luck to you..

    Hi Marc,

What an awful experience.... which doesn't help the FMS, at all. I am afraid my Persistent Pain Clinic appts have been uneventful too although not as negative or rude as yours. The holistic method they're supposed to adopt, doesn't come off as far as I'm concerned (nor for you by the sounds of it). I am to have counselling alongside very basic physiotherapist input of charting the minutes of walking over a set time period. I've seen the therapist 3 times but had no appts for counselling. One is of no use without the other. They discussed alternative therapies e.g. acupuncture but were keen to add that I should source this myself (incurring the cost). My experience has left me in no doubt that PPC is a waste of my time and that their inadequacies are down to their budgets. Very poor indeed. I think you should ask your GP if he/she can refer you to a different pain clinic, within another hospital maybe.

Wishing you the best of luck .

    Hello Marc,

Sorry to hear you have had such a bad experience. That is not on! Although he did diagnose you (very few seem to), you need to look for another Doc. You could ask to be feferred to rheumotology, they semm to be the ones that diagnose. I am only on Amitriptylene, helps with sleep, not so much pain. Take ibuprofen sometimes, but I think we probanly have to learn to live with the pain.

    Take care, Anne

Why should we put up with it though? We have done nothing to deserve this. Why shouldn't we have access to powerful pain medications that people with other chronic pain conditions do. Its not right none of it.

I agree with you Marc, there is no reason why is 2015 people have to endure constant pain.  People that abuse pain killers make it difficult for people who really need them to get them.  It's terrible! You keep looking and researching until you find an answer to help you.  Don't settle, you have to be an advocate for your own health. Good Luck to you

I also had a bad experience at a Pain Clinic. The first one I went too were great!Lovely nurses very helpful and polite.I had trigger point injections first, they did not relly do anything, then they offered me a course of acupunture.I had 4 sessions, one a week and it was amazing. The relief of having no pain in my neck was great! However I was then told that the NHS were no longer funding this treatment as it was not seen to be worth the money!I could not believe it.I enquired further and when they realised how much pain relief it gave me,they offered me another 6 sessions with a physio, did not seem to work as well.I think it was because they did not insert the needles the same!

When this came to an end,I was then refered to another hospital and another Pain Clinic. All they would offer was a group meeting and then a follow up of a 6 week course in pain management, this would involve-Thai Chi and mindful meditation! I had never heard anything like it and was left feeling very upset and angry!

I did not bother with the course,as quite honestly I did not see the point! We want pain relief not meditation!

Only option now is to carry on living with the constant pain and hoping someday I will find some kind of relief!

It sounds like this doctor doesn't know what he's talking about.

I'm no doctor myself, but Acupuncture does not work.

Ask your doctor about Pregabalin, Duloxetine and Morphine Sulphate

    Tablets.

They all help with the pain of Fibromyalgia. The Pregabalin and Duloxtine will help with the nerve damage that you get with the Fibromyalgia and the Morphine are great with pain. I also take Oramorph Oral Solution, I

Take this every four hours when required.

Go back to your odds and ask for that 2nd opinion. And then mention the pain killers/antidepressants for pain.

You should not make a statement that Acupuncture does not work, it has been around for thousands of years. What might not work for some may work for others.

      Hi,

Acupunctur DOES work if done correctly! The relief I felt just an hour after having it was the best I had felt for years! I hvae had fibro for 5 and a half years now and it was the only treatment that did anyhting!

I have been on every meds going-gabapentin,pregabalin,tramadol,amitriptyline,naproxen,codeine and more!

I am currently on 4 for fibro,I refuse to have any that will make me gain weight,as I have had problems before and will not go back to that!

I have also had intense physio, ultra sound scans,MRI' s,Ct scans, trigger point injections but nothing!

I gave up on the pain clinic a couple of years ago,so I now have to deal with this myself!Doctors gave up with me while ago, they just prescribe me with a different tablet if I mention it,so I suffer in silence cry

It sounds like you saw a very unhelpfuI doctor! A lot of the things you asked about have certainly worked for some people.I think you should consider Tai Chi and mindfulness meditation. Quite a lot of council Leisure Centres offer Tai Chi classes so they are not too expensive. They may not work for everyone but they have been a big help to me. I have been going to a Tai Chi class for about a year. You learn to relax all your muscles and in turn this can help to reduce pain. I have also been on a Mindfulness course and have found that if I am in a lot of pain when I get home from work, 20 minutes of mindful meditation helps to reduce the pain dramatically. If someone had told me this would work before I tried it I would have been very skeptical but it certainly works for me.confused I also take Amitriptyline, 20mg at night, anymore and I am a bit of a Zombie in the mornings. Pain relief alone does not seem to help with this illness. Please try some of the things people have suggested in their replies. I hope you find something that helps and also a more understanding doctor.
