Terribly itchy skin and bruising

So the last few years I have suffered with itchy skin. I would have flar ups so bad my skin would be cut so much from itching. At the minute my back is shocking!! I went drs and was told it was just a rash, now this rash has spread right across my back, with some dark patches. I also have random bruising quite a lot and I also went to the drs about this and the Dr had no explanation at all. I hate wasting Drs time, but something isn't right.

All they do is through steroid cream at me and never actually do any tests.

I've noticed on my skin I have the tiniest red spots, and recently had a nose bleed which I have never had in my life and also some blood from behind. Just don't feel like my Dr listens at all and it's like talking to a brick wall.

Hi mll23. The symptoms you have are close to what mine were before I was diagnosed with Polycythemia Vera. You can google this disease and compare your symptoms. I was diagnosed 10 yrs ago, and am still doing OK. I have been on Hydroxyurea all this time. Your doctor could easily test for the symptoms. A simple blood test called a CBC would determine if you have a high red blood count. If you do, he shd refer you to a Hematologist who would then diagnose you. The disease soounds scary, but I have managed very well since being diagnosed. Hope to see that you have soon been diagnosed with whatever you actually have. Best wishes, harrishill

I suggest you do a CBC, blood smear, reticulocytes, liver test panel(with prothrombin time) and erythropoetin. This will exclude any sinister diseases.

That was meant for MLL123,sorry.Also if your doctor does not want to do the tests you can do them in a private laboratory.

Thanks for the reply. It's really frustrating as I feel like a broken record when I go to the drs and just get told it's a rash. I also lost my sight last year for about 3 months, after always having perfect eyes and no issues. Even that got put down to a virus. My sight has come back, but not fully and I do get blurred vision/blind spots now and again. Not sure if it's all linked.

Thank you for the reply. Maybe I need to be more persistant when I go to the drs and push for tests.

If your doctor doesn't want to reffer you to lab tests you can do them in private and consult a hematologist.

Hi  George and MLL 123. Yes, I am not sure how your health plan works, but here in the US, we cannot see a Hematologist unless we are referred by our doctor.  And we cannot get a blood test unless referred by a doctor or Hematologist, etc. If my doctor hasn;t referred me, sometimes I call her nurse and ask for a referral to see the Podiatrist, or if needed, the Hematologist, etc. Sometimes she needs to see me before she will refer me, but other times she doesn't find it necessary. If I were sick and thought I needed a blood test, I would ask her to give me a referral. If she agrees, she will do so. harrishill.

Well that is unfortunate.Where i live ,a doctor can reffer you to a specialist and lab tests. If he does not want to you can visit the specialist and do the tests ,but for a higher price.
