Terrified of colonoscopy

i posted last week about having an upcoming appt with a colorectal surgeon. well i had it today. yikes, that was...invasive and humiliating. for reminder, i am a 35 year old female with frequent painless rectal bleeding. sure enough, it was confirmed that i not only have bad piles, but also an anal fissure (weird since i havent had pain since having my baby early last year), and proctitis. she said she saw a little blood higher up but it may have been pushed up by the scope. she prescribed a suppository and started me on citracel. ive had a mild iron deficiency for a bit (ive had very heavy periods all year) so that plus the blood she ordered a colonoscopy in 2 whole months. i already have high anxiety and right now i am feeling so anxious i could explode! i knew there was like a 75% chance id be ordered a colonoscopy after the appt no matter what. im just terrified. for reference i have not had any stomach pain or change in stool really significant, weight steady, all other blood exvept HGB is great and that is back to normal since supplements. what if i wake up and they say found a huge tumor??? my daughter is 21 months. i am going crazy!!!

I've had 6 or 7 colonscopys since I was 25. I'm losing blood somewhere and i do have rectal bleeding but thru out the whole thing the worse thing they was hemorrhoids but it wasnt blood for my hemoglobin to be at a 4.1 and I was up talking and walking like normal. I should have been in organ failure. i need 4 bags of blood that night just to get above 7. for me right normal blood levels are 6 and up. I've been thru all kinda of tests and they still cant find out what's wrong. if you wanna chat more feel free to email me jazzysmom1225@gmail.com just tell your from here.

    Hi Lou,

Firstly anxiety is often the worst part of any procedure and I sympathize with you on that one.

Lets look at the facts, you've not had a change in bowel movements, no unexplained weight loss, no pain and your bloods are fine and if you're Consultant was at all concerned you would be having that colonoscopy next week not in two months time.

Please don't worry about it, get on with enjoying Christmas with your daughter who at 21 months is going to love it this year.

Sarah, you said it well! I'll also add that a colonoscopy is painless! The worst part is the day before cleansing. That is not painful but it involves a lot of running to the bathroom.

Hi Lou, I'm 56 years old and had my first and last colonoscopy at the age of 45 years old. It was painful and invasive. I was lucky nothing was found. In your case your Doctor and you made the right decisions. There are symptoms that Doctors look for in regards to information provided by us their patients in consideration for scheduling a colonoscopy. When I was 45 none of my friends, co workers or relatives ever talked about it the way they do now at my current age. I mentioned the last colonoscopy was my first and only one. After that experience I started seeing friends and relatives have bad experiences and injuries from a colonoscopy. I discovered Cologuard. Not all Doctors will recommend it but I will. After all it's non invasive and I will only recommend others try it after looking into it themselves . In this new electronic information age it's easy to look up the success and failure rates of some of these Doctors. Some insurance companies won't cover cologuard but it's cheaper than a colonoscopy and risk free. Until Medical institutions can guarantee a colonoscopy procedure with no complications , I'm sticking with cologuard unless a colonoscopy is 100% necessary .
