Hello,

I am curious, do doctors test for Haemochromatosis or do you use some place like 23 and me?? I am not talking about a complete iron panel but actually the dna to see if you're a carrier or have the mutation/s ?

Thank you,

Lil

In Canada If you are talking about just having a genetic test done to see if you have the gene you are on your own. If normal blood tests, medical examination and history reveal you may have hemochromatosis, eventually you will likely be referred for a genetic blood test.

No they do not test for it what they will do is routine blood testing and if they see an issue they will either forward you to specialist or check family history if available then order the test which is simple blood being taken sent away (depending on country test is done in different country or may just be a different state so it can take a few weeks for results )

In Australia, your gp will request an Iron Studies test, and if your ferritin level is high (reference levels depend on your age), and your Transferrin Saturation % is higher than 45%, (twice in some cases), your gp will then request a genetic test.

Or if you have a 1st degree relative with diagnosed haemochromatosis, you are entitled to a genetic test regardless.

Unfortunately, some drs have different mindsets.
