Tests

I need some advice. I have been to a urologist. He has sent me for tests and sent a letter with results on it back. I have no idea what some of it means however i am not seeing him now for 3 months and my renal specialist im seeing in june.

My results read like this.

Atrophic left kidney some scarring in right upper pole. Post void bladder residual volume 5 mls.

Mag 3 renogram with indirect micturating cysto urethrogram left kidney 9.7% right kidney 90.3% normal drainage of right kidney.

My question is i have always been told i had chronic kidney disease stage 3b however if its 90% working doesnt that mean i am in the best of health and my kidneys are working fine so i haven't got this condition after all.

Thanks

Your tests results says that your left kidney is severely damaged....as per the normal range of MAG3 tests, the difference in the working percentage of both kidneys should not be more than 20 which means that 40-60 is the normal range whereas the difference of less than 10 is ideal. In your case the difference is 80. So your left kidney is working only 9.3 however the normal range is 40+ and your right kidney is compensating for the loss. Please see a nephrologist as soon as possible

    Hi Rachael,

I am not a doc, but I think what the results mean is that your left kidney is functioning poorly but your right kidney is working well.  It is not clear to me exactly what is the cause of the poor left kidney function, it may be that this will require some form of treatment.  With over 90% right function you should not have a problem day to day, as many people end up with only 1 kidney - I have  30% with only one kidney, as I had the other one removed.

A discussion with the renal consultant may clarify what is wrong with the left kidney and what action if any is needed.

Just look after the good one, eat carefully, exercise, and check if any medication you take is kidney friendly.

Rachel.  I am not a doctor but as I read this information, you are correct that your right kidney is working at 90% efficiency.  However the left kidney is 9.7%/  And if you have previously been told you have stage 3 ckd, it is likely we are reading this correct that your left kidney is only 9.7%.  But I question if this interpretation is a correct one since no doctor wants to see you until June.
