That one killer exercise

Hi, me again! I seem to be getting on quite well with the exercises I've been given, except one! Does anyone else have a problem with lifting the leg off the bed straight up? My leg is like a dead weight!! All the other exercises are easy by comparison. I'm not sure whether my op was anterior or posterior, but my scar runs up the side of my leg and curves towards my buttock. Guessing this is anterior but my consultant just said the cut will be in your side but I work at the front!! Keep positive hipsters xxxx

I started rehab this past Thur and had a session Fri.  The leg lift is by far the toughest excercise for me.  Be sure you lock your good leg in place, that will help you more easilty lift your repaired hip/leg.  Today, I was able to do a set of 10 and then  a set of 5, very difficult.  Yesterday at rehad I was able to do 3 sets of ten.

Do not over do, I need to listen to my own advice !!!

    I had posterior as well.

Keep up the good work !!!

I mistyped earlier be sure you lock in your bad leg/hip, that will help.

Yes, sounds like anterior. YES! That was hardest for me. I couldn't do it at all with the pt person. I'll be 5 weeks this Monday and I can just now begin to do it. Don't worry, it will come back!!

Hi, yes the leg lift seemed to be impossible for the first few weeks. Are you using a towel or cloth to help. This helps if we are talking about the same exercise.

    Take Care,

Hi Cathy, it's not the one where you push the back of your knee into the mattress whilst lifting your foot off the bed, it's the full leg lift keeping it straight. So from the hip as it were. Funnily enough my pt gave me a rubber band to use to increase resistance when doing leg out to side standing exercise so I'm using that to help my leg off the bed, no doubt it will come, I had problems with several exercises to start with but am finding them a lot easier now, this is just the last to come good. Thanks everyone for some really useful info, I honestly feel finding this forum has been a life line for me! Xxx janine

If you look up the clam shell exercises on the internet you will find some that explain how to do it correctly, this is important to achieve the strength in particular muscles, and I know how frustrating it is when your knee doens't lift. Physio finally explained to me about feeling for the muscles twitching, with the different exercises, it was most re-assuring to feel the muscle working even if I coudn't lift my leg, but it did come over a couple of weeks of intensive trying, about 3 - 4 times a day lying on my bed, but I was months on from my surgery and struggling with my leg, it just wouldn't work for me, but it did come right when I finally got the exercises right.

Hi jixipix.....For the scar yours sounds like mine and my surgery was posterior...Oh and YES for that exercise. I was trying to forget about that one! That was the worst one of all.....Now 10 weeks post op and having my second hip replacement in less than two weeks...Not looking forward to that exercise again....Barb

That's reassuring, yes mine is posterior hence restrictions and larger scar.  I'm persevering with the exercise, am pretty stubborn so it won't be for want of trying!!!!  Good luck with your second hip, I'm sure you'll be a star patient and get those exercises nailed in no time!  janine x

hi jixipix,  that is a tough one but after I watched that video on youtube I understand why ...with posteruior approach, muscles, tendons etc were severed and then repaired - a lot of healing is taking place and everything is still so fragile - My PT wanted me to wait with this exercise until week 6 and then try it, doing 3 reps and building up from there -- it is way too streneous and damage is done easily - when it hurts, stop .... big warm hugrenee

Hiya Renee, yep that figures, it's just like the message isn't really getting through, however am managing 5 per  session, with the aid of my big rubber band thing, they are getting easier (albeit minimally!!!)  hugs back at you x

I used to put my crutch/stick under my foor to help raise it, you could use a belt or a cord.
