That "smell" after the surgery?

After the TKR, about a week, I began to experience a smell - not pleasant.  i thought I might have spilled something or the like.  Washed everything - including me.  But, there it was again-everywhere.

Come to find out that for a few of us the anesthesia (general or spinal) can result in causing an odor - and one that only we can smell- It's not our immagination, it's very real.  And, it can take weeks to months to go away  - time it takes for the liver to clear the chemicals.  Some people can even, unfortunately, taste it, too.

i have the same issue. Am taking milk thistle tincture and it is helping. It also has a weird smell but is definitely helping to reduce the anaesthetic odour as it works as a liver detoxifier.

Hi, my dog was neutered 2 day's ago and now has the most awful, bitter/burnt rubber smell coming from them. Apparently it's a known reaction of the body to anaesthetic.

Very interesting, I've currently had bypass surgery and my family continues to say I smell like the hospital. lol I thought it was a joke at first, I've took plenty of showers and honestly my younger daughter asked me "Mommy do you smell that ?"at first I didn't but about an hour later I noticed it 👀 pretty mind blown but yeah its a thing. My family just says I smell like hospital lol. Hopefully it will go away in a few weeks.

It's been 3 days since I had surgery, and I am experiencing this smell! It began the day after I got home from the hospital, and I thought it was just "hospital smell". It is especially notable in water, toothpaste, fresh vegetables, etc. I was making dinner and had to have a family member take over because the smell of the fresh vegetables was nauseating. I especially love limes and gave one a whiff just for kicks and almost gagged. The scent is the same throughout the different items. Almost a sweet chemical off-putting scent. Hoping to have a speedy recovery with the smell issues, but glad to know I'm not alone!

hi everyone. .I am 8 weeks out post op tkr. 2-3 weeks ago I started smelling this horrible smell. I gave it a few days thinking it would go away and now I honestly feel like I'm losing my mind. I smell it everywhere! it's in my house it's in my car. I thought it was my dog I kept giving him a bath. I took my vents apart in my house and vacuum them out the best I could. I've taken drawers out and vacuum out dust and lint thinking there was something dead in my cupboards. I dumped out a bag of potatoes thinking I had a rotten potato in the bag. I cleaned out under my fridge and my drain pan. I have washed my walls in my house, I have rewashed all of my clothes with a different laundry soap. I've taken my vacuum cleaner apart and washed it out thinking there was something in my vacuum cleaner that I vacuumed up. I have baking soda under my kitchen sink. I keep washing my furniture covers. My kids do not smell it, nobody else who comes in my house can smell the smell that I smell and it's horrible and I honestly feel like I'm losing my mind and I am going nuts. and then I started to think maybe it's me that smells. Is my body producing an odor. I keep a candle lit to try and cover up the odor because I feel like my whole house just stinks but then my car stinks to (I seem to think) I am having a lot of troubles with this knee replacement. I still am not healed and I now need to see a specialist because it is not healing properly. Which adds to my anxiety and depression and wondering when and if I'll ever be able to go back to work. Im only 46. And now the smell, I literally feel like I belong in a nuthouse.

I'm 3 weeks post TKR and had a spinal. I have found the smell of many food repulsive. Friends and neighbors brought food and although the food was wonderful I'm sure I ended up tossing most of it out due to the smell. I did notice yesterday that this is getting better

It is common to have changes in taste and smell after surgery due to administered medications including anesthetic agents. It generally goes away after a few weeks.
