The dreaded golf ball

Hi,  I am almost 14 months post RTHR and have (apart from a few blips early on) done really well - a text book recovery to be honest. This weekend I went on a weekend away with husband to visit his old university and city (Liverpool). I overdid the walking be time my steps app recorded 20,000+ steps I have never walked that much since my op.

I now now have the golf ball in my bottom feeling again - not had for months and the left hand side of my back is in really bad pain. I'm having to use a crutch to get about this evening. What a nuisance. I'm hoping I haven't done anything too myself-pain mainly came on after I got home and cleaned up after daughter who had stayed at home to take care of the dog 🙄  I'm contemplating a strong painkiller before bed something I've not had to do for over a year. So cross with myself for being so silly.

So so folks pride comes etc please be careful it seems that we have to be very mindful of what we do for a long time after our surgery if not for rest of lives.

Catrin.

Yeah l agree with you all textbook recovery in both my hip replacement done in the space of 3 months. Though l was better than l was went out for dinner sat for 3 hrs done numorous sets of stairs a shopping centre then a retail park. Boy did l hit a brick wall when l got home l was in so much pain l was close to tears l almost fell down as l had no energy to stand l missed a set of painkillers too which made it worse. I really see how much l am limited to do. Of course l am only 7 weeks post last op but l thought l was fine. Just showed me how much my painkillers mask my real pain and that l have a long way to go.

    Hi Catrin,

I was looking on here today just to see whether anyone else has had any hip pain 12 months on from a THR. So I'm not glad to hear you had some pain I'm just releived that I'm not the only one. As another blogger said previously we seem to be told that we'll be pain free and back to normal post op so our expectations are high.

In the last few days I have had sharp pains in my hip when I'm walking like I used to get a couple of years pre op before it got worse and feeling a bit worried. I'm very active and hoping it's cos I've just moved house and been lifting and bending etc too much in the last couple of weeks.

PS...20,000 steps is very impresssive by anyones standards!

    Thanks,

    C

Max, I think you are right, that moving and lifting and bending so much could have caused the pain you are feeling now. Perhaps if you just take it easy for awhile, whatever you strained will heal up and the pain will go away. Moving house causes pain in everyone, with a THR or not!

Thanks for this discussion, it reminds me of the risks. I also am one of the lucky ones with a good recovery. After 3 months I was playing tennis again. After some more months of tennis I tore my calf muscle badly, putting myself out for a further 3 months. it actually took longer to recover from that than the THR. So I don't go that extra yard any more when playing. I need to remember that age (I'm 66) might be a factor as well as the THR. I get the occasional minor twinge. I now realise what a neurotic I am compared to what others put up with. Hope the golf ball disappears soon. For me the op was well worth it.

Thank you, it just goes to show, even when we feel like we can reach the sky, there may still be obstacles on the way. I'm only 9 weeks tomorrow.

Hope it sorts out quickly for you.

Thanks everyone. It seems I MAY have a small tear (??) in my gluteus medius and so have to take it easy for a while. Bit of a pain in the bum (pardon the pun). Am using ice nad heat and resting in between small walks. It seems that I need to modify what I do - I'm not superwoman after all 😃

Catrin, I sincerely hope that if you do have a GM tear, that it is a small one, and that it heals soon! These gluteal tendon/muscle problems can be quite serious. I have a tear in my gluteus medius that is bad enough that I have had a severe limp and pain since my THR last July and require surgery to repair, which will be happening in 3 weeks. Do everything you can to rest and not stress your GM so it heals properly and doesn't get worse. I truly feel your pain!

Annie,  the GP seems to think it's a small one. I felt something "go" when I was climbing the stairs to the top of a bus. I only have localised pain with none down my leg or anywhere else. It's on the opposite ide to my THR and I think I knew deep down I shouldn't/couldn't climb the bus stairs and was trying to protect my hip by overcompensating with the other side - if that makes sense. Also I just wanted a normal weekend away with husband without having to say "I can't do that "

where is your pain located and how bad is it? I'm straight upward when standing today and it's worst when getting up from sitting. Hope you get it sorted soon.
