The pain clinic

hey all, hope your having an ok day. i have my first appointment at the pain clinic in the morning, i'm half looking forward to it half dreading it. the usual train of thought what if i feel ill by the time i get there and then have to sit there for an hour being taked at by several different people in a group of other sufferes probably thinking the same thing while trying to pay attention to them instead of my own inner voices.

But they could be really useful and give me info i don't already have so i must push myself to get the 4 busses (can't afford a taxi) to get there and back and just hope i make it (i have horrid dizziness & fainting spells if i over exert).

I can alway's go to bed when i get back i guess, let's hope the info i get is worth going for.

Has anyone else been and found it useful?.

    Hi Gill,

Well my first appointment at pain clinic was just a one to one with the pain consultant, who diagnosed me and prescribed Pregabalin. A couple of years on, I am doing a pain management programme, which runs for 5 weeks, 2 mornings a week. I wonder if this is what you are referring to? If so, I have just finished the first week, and so far it's looking as though it's going to be really helpful. I don't envy you having to get four buses though. Is there no community transport in your area? I ask because my husband is a driver for a community transport company, taking elderly or disabled people to hospital appointments, shopping, etc. Good luck x

Also, where mine is held, they don't mind if you need to lie on the floor, and even have a bed in the room which you can lie on if you need to. x

Hi Jeanne, it probably is the same thing yes, although i was diagnosed by a rheumatologist and it was him who referred me to the pain management clinic. i'm already on amitriptyline & prescription co-codamol recommended by him and i don't want to change from those. I guess i just have images of them making me get on a tredmill for testing and pulling me this that and the other way but it probably wont be like that, as for the 4 buses, to get to the hospital i will have to get a bus from the top of my street and go 5 stops to the bus station (i can't walk that far) then get on another bus to the hospital then the same coming back. sad but i don't know about community transport.. the rheumatologist just signed me off back to the gp who doesn't really do anything except sign my prescriptions so i'm kind of in the dark with not much support.. This is why i know i must go tomorrow as it could (i hope) be a kind of life line for me.

all i can do is try i guess.

hi i went to a pain clinic and they are used to people feeling ill while there and dont expect more than you can deal with to start with its just asking what you need help with and they do let you take a break. have you tried patient transport in my area it was listed when i googled it or you may find there number if you ring your local hospital its available for transport to appointments you have to answer some questions when you ring them ( tell them you cant use public transport due to your dizzy, fainting spells) they will ask if you can do your own shopping and if you have friends or family to take you ect... if you cant find this service your GP can advice

Thanks jeanne, it went ok. There isn't much they can tell me or help me with as i'm already doing what they would have recommended.

i'm still glad i went as at least now i know i'm doing what i should be.

Hi Gill Im due to start a four hour (YES 4 HOUR )  at the pain clinic, this will be the 3 group  I have started at  but I really dont understand  why you have to attend these sessions  I live in the UK and must pay for petrol to get their and on top of that  I have to pay for 4 hours car parking at 1.75  an hour.  can you tell me sitting with this group that you attended,  was it helpful or not,  I am agreeing to go  but I make no promise to stay for the four hours.  and if my pain is causing me more stress, I WILL GET UP AND WALK OUT.   I amoff sick at the moment and I have to attend a medical check because my employer wants me to agree to resine from work because of my PHN  being so painful, also it was stated that I need to wear a bra because I am working with senior classes, im improply dressed  .  I have a letter from the hospital stating  That I cant wear a bra, Im not walking around with see through tops,  in fact I wear a female type vest then a top then a buttoned up jumper, but Im still being told that I am not wearing suitable clothes to be working with senior students. OK  Gill  I will keep you informed  how my pain clinic  event goes.

Hi jocelyne. I went to the induction session but decided not to sign up to the course, 3 hours at a time, in a group. i know i wont do it and would dread it every week so i did't see the point putting myself through the stress when they can't tell me anything or do anyhing i'm not already doing.so it wasn't for me. at the induction the lady said if you are thinking, "i'll just go for a couple of weeks and see how i go". then please don't sign up as they only want people who would be commited to the full 8 week course as places are like gold dust...

I hope it benefits you though.

      Good luck.

      xx
