The Scar Left Behind

Perhaps it was the wrong thing to do but I googled the scar for hip replacements and got an eyeful of some horrible stitching, is this normal for todays operations I will be talking about it at the preop soon what I saw made me terriblely depressed, perhaps I was a fool to look...Ian.

Hello Ian, I had my op last july - yes the scar is pehaps a big bigger than I thought but over time the scar will fade but never totaly -  I have used bio-oil twice daily over the scar since the op and it does help in reducing the the mark.

    Regards Arthur

Hi Ian. I'm 4 weeks post op & my scar is fine. Surgeon used sterastrips which were removed after 2 weeks. I would take more notice of what people tell you on here than anything you will see on the Internet. We've all been through it. Good luck.

    Ian,

It depends on where you live and your doctor. I live in the U.S. and had minimally invasive THR and my incision was 3" long, verticle between my hip and buttock. Very inconspicious and it was glued so I didn't have to worry about stitches or staples. I was very thankful to my skilled surgeon for this.

    Good luck!

They've obviously only shown you the bad ones Ian. I have got a lovely little line about 7-8" which will fade and I think just look like a dimple over time. I'm only 6 wks post op.

The scar is the last of your concerns lol a bit like me asking if I can wear high heels after my op, they laughed and said as men they didn't have that problem but probably not, however I can confirm I have tried and don't see any problems with wearing heels, not too high obviously and not too thin.

Hi Valerie, I've only tried them on in the house and they are chunky heels, lucky they are back in fashion, usually wear flats otherwise, but my son is getting married Easter Monday and I want to wear heels, so I'm going to get some block 2 1/2 " heel shoes for that, I can always take them off after the nuptials as the wedding and reception is in a windmill.

Hello Christine. I have been wearing my heeled boots, probably only 2inch high with no problem.  Much better than my flat zip up the side granny shoes, I am a granny though of 68, but still like to look nice, so good luck.

Thank you shirley for sharing thats excellent, of course you wamt to look nice and more importantly i think that makes you feel good.

I'll have a pair of flats with me in case I need them as well.

What stage post op did you start wearing your 2" heels ?

when my daughter got married i bought myself 3 pairs of shoes and gradually got shorter as the day/evening progressed - nothing to do with hips just comfort and dancing!!!!!

Ha ha that made me laugh Valerie, good idea, that is being prepared, as only a small venue it won't be a problem, we are sleeping there so I will have my flat shoes there anyway and I could be in bare feet, it won't matter.

    Hi Ian,

i had what most people in the UK get now. A small incision that the surgeon stitches the underlying muscle with sutures that dissolve over a period of time. The skin edges fit nicely together, but may be glued if that is the surgeons preference. They will tell you all of this at pre-op!  Don,t be depressed!  There is no need.

    Good luck.

My scar is about 6inches long, however it is only a fine line, still red but it will fade.  I was glued and had stera strips put on, so no stitch marks or staples.  When you have your pre-op, I would ask them how they seal the wound and if they glue it, as this leaves the least marks.  The District Nurse who came to remove the stera strips after 10 days, said it was the best she had seen and to be honest it is very neat. She said it will fade to a fine white line in time.  I am not bothered actually, as I am not going to enter any beauty contests at my age.

Im on my 2nd THR..my surgeon glued the incision both times.

Dressing removed at 10 days to reveal a nicely healed neat scar.

No clips or stitches to worry about😊

Id enquire if you could have the same.
