The sedative side-effects of Quetiapine v Valproate

I have been on Quetiapine for about 2 months. I am still on a fairly low dosage but even with taking it in the evening I cannot function properly until the afternoon.

When ir was suggested that I might take q it was proposed that I might take Valproate as an alternative.

I am thinking of reconsidering my position re .

Does anyone have any observations?

    Are you on the sustained release or the instant release? I found that the "normal" quetiapine knocked me for six, but the sustained release version leaves me with no "hangover" at all.

    Quetiapine paralysed me in the way Rohypnol paralyses the body. 2 Suzy Q'sand I was helpless. Now I am successfully managing my bipolar 2 with Lamotrigine 2 x 25 mg per day. Quetiapine is a dangerous - all the antipsychotic treatments are but Suzy is one of the worst gg

    Must admit Quietiapine has been a wonder drug for me; it seems to effect people in very different ways.

    I don't know whether I am on slow release, but if I am the NHS Medicines Guide says that I shouldn't cut the tablet in half which I am doing..

    It should tell you on the box. IR or nothing is the immediate release. XR / XL is the extended release. It made a good deal of difference to me.

    I don't get it in a white box but the instruction sheet doesn't specify whether XL or non-XL but it does say that the tablet should not be chewed which suggests it is XL. I will therefore go to my pharmacist and point out that I am being advised to cut the tablet and ask to have the 50 mg tablet.
