The Urolift procedure; patient views and questions

Posted , 264 users are following.

Would it be possible to keep this thread purely about Urolift and a means of sharing experiences from those who have undergone the process and invite debate from those considering it.

The Urolift process plus pros and cons are accurately described at many a website. Other very long threads discuss in detail BPH and other treatments such as TURPS, laser tend to overshadow people looking for advice on Urolift.

So for me, tired of getting up in the night. Tired of the medication and its side effects, tiredness and ED. Quality of life getting me down. I am 60 and reckon to be pretty fit and active.

I underwent this treatment (as an alternative to TURPS) 2 weeks ago at one of the 5 or 6 clinics/hospitals that appear to offer this treatment in the UK. It really was as simple as described on the web.

I had a 30 minute consultation with the consultant whereby he explained the procedure.

The treatment was booked for 10 am., it took about 15 minutes. I had it done under a local anaesthetic. To be frank if you are used to having your prostate and other bits probed there is no pain. It is just the thought of it you have to come to terms with. After the treatment you have to drink a lot of water to flush your system but I was allowed to drive home by dinner time.

First warning here. I did have to stop probably every 15 minutes with a sudden need to urinate. Fortunately I took a urine bottle from the clinic !

I could write for ages but will see what response I get to this post. I know on the day I was there, 4 other blokes were having the procedure and I sensed there was a regular flow of patients.

I’m now going through the period whereby I’m asking myself is there any improvement? It’s only 2 weeks in. I’m not sure is the answer at the moment. We are all different and recovery and improvement I am told does take time anything from 2/3 weeks to 2/3 months maybe longer. Your system needs time to readjust, I understand that, I don’t know how much time but I’m due for a follow up next week. I'm remaining positive.Would welcome comments from others.

Hello  Saw your post to charles.  I live in Orlando Fl  Had the urolift done on April 27, 2015.  Most of the time they do not use a catheter but my doctor put one in for me.  He knows that I have a problem peeing on demand and I did not know if I could after the procedure.  He was looking out for me.  I think it was a good idea because I went home within a hour of having the urolift done.  Drank alot of water and by night time the urine was clear in the bag.  Had it taking out 2 days later and the only pain I had was the burning from the catheter after it  taken out  After 4 or 5 days the was more improvement.  You should be healed within a month.  We all heal at diffrent rates.  But I can tell you now after 7 weeks I have a good stream and I don't get up at night to pee at all.  Also I am on no meds at all.  It's the best thing I have done for myself  E-mail me anytime and I can tell you more if you would like to know anything else.  Ken

Hi Kenneth. Iive in Miami and had the Urolift done last December. As of now, I'm back to where I was before the Urolift. Same problems as before. Urolift was a bust for me. I think my doctor was inexperienced. Can you tell me the name of the doctor that did your procedure? I'm assuming he is in Orlando.

      Thanks

I doubt very seriously if the Doctor did a bad job.  Sometimes its the bladder and something called nocturia.  I also had a urolift done on June 23rd of this year.  In other words just 11 days ago.  I was getting up 4 times a night and now Iam getting up 3 times a night. Dissapointed- yes- but it is better than before.  I have a nice stream and empty my bladder completely and can also hold it longer before going.  So what in particular is your "specific problem"???  It seems that everybody responds to see procedures differently.  I also had a "PAE" last Sept. of 2014 which did not help me at all.

Albin I sent you the information you asked for.  What is going on now.  I have never heard of anyone having a problem.  How many implants did they put in.  Have you gone back to the doctor to see what the problem is.  Maybe he did not put in enough inplants.  I had 4 implants put in.  Had my done about 8 weeks ago .  Flow is good don't get up at night and on no pills.  Check with you doctor  Please let me know  Ken

Thanks, Ken, for the info. I tried to call your doctor today but it appears that they are starting the holiday early so no contact. My doctor said that he would put in 4 inplants but later he said he only put in 3. I was only his second patient for the Urolift but he assured me that it was a simple procedure for him. He also said that he would use a local instead of putting me to sleep for the procedure. Again, he lied because they did put me to sleep. Did your doctor use a local? I now get up 3,4 or 5 times per night to pee so I am back to where I started. It's great that you're procedure worked well for you but if you check a lot of the response from other Urolift patients, there are many where the procedure did not work, some of which because they had a middle-lobe which presented problems. I would like to try again with a more experienced doctor.

Hey there Stan.  I'm sorry your having a problem.  Why would he only put in 3 that would make it un even.  I know when I was having mine done my doctor told me at least 2  He put in 4 so it even.  He has done in the 3 years it been in the US. I would check with my doctor again  I trust him to do the right things.  He is very nice and so are the nurses.  I was put out.  Was only out about 45 minutes.  They have to do alot of probing so that would hurt if you were awake.  I also had a catheter in for my own safety  I don't pee on demand and I was afaid that I would clog so we talk and he put one in.  Never had one before.  It was something but I think it help me clare out my blood.  By the end of the first day it was yellow.  Drank alot of water  Take care and I help you can get some help  Ken

Does anyone know which UK hospitals offer Urolift on the NHS? I'm in the south, near Portsmouth. Is there a list anywhere which shows what procedures different hospitals can provide?

Thanks for your help Ken and everyone who has responded.

I have discovered that there is a list of uk hospitals carrying out the procedure on the Ultralift UK website under the tab "find a doctor" this was very helpful as I have found at least two hospitals not far from me. now its just a case of getting my GP to refer me.

Thats great.  Tell your doctor that you would like to try this first.  Don't let him tell you it's a waste the time.  It's your time and body  Take care and keep me up to date..Ken
