The Urolift procedure; patient views and questions

Posted , 264 users are following.

Would it be possible to keep this thread purely about Urolift and a means of sharing experiences from those who have undergone the process and invite debate from those considering it.

The Urolift process plus pros and cons are accurately described at many a website. Other very long threads discuss in detail BPH and other treatments such as TURPS, laser tend to overshadow people looking for advice on Urolift.

So for me, tired of getting up in the night. Tired of the medication and its side effects, tiredness and ED. Quality of life getting me down. I am 60 and reckon to be pretty fit and active.

I underwent this treatment (as an alternative to TURPS) 2 weeks ago at one of the 5 or 6 clinics/hospitals that appear to offer this treatment in the UK. It really was as simple as described on the web.

I had a 30 minute consultation with the consultant whereby he explained the procedure.

The treatment was booked for 10 am., it took about 15 minutes. I had it done under a local anaesthetic. To be frank if you are used to having your prostate and other bits probed there is no pain. It is just the thought of it you have to come to terms with. After the treatment you have to drink a lot of water to flush your system but I was allowed to drive home by dinner time.

First warning here. I did have to stop probably every 15 minutes with a sudden need to urinate. Fortunately I took a urine bottle from the clinic !

I could write for ages but will see what response I get to this post. I know on the day I was there, 4 other blokes were having the procedure and I sensed there was a regular flow of patients.

I’m now going through the period whereby I’m asking myself is there any improvement? It’s only 2 weeks in. I’m not sure is the answer at the moment. We are all different and recovery and improvement I am told does take time anything from 2/3 weeks to 2/3 months maybe longer. Your system needs time to readjust, I understand that, I don’t know how much time but I’m due for a follow up next week. I'm remaining positive.Would welcome comments from others.

#Urolift #drwalsh has destroyed my life. After surgery had catheter now scar tissue now laser surgery now self catheters 4 LIFE. DON'T DO IT

I am happy with the Urolift I had done last December in Kalispell Montana by a qualfied Urologist.  I feel bad for you that your procedure did not work out.  I had the appropriate screening for median lobe with ultra sound.  To make a blanket statement to not have a Urolift after your bad experience is understandable but is more than likely not appropriate across the board for patients with enlarged prostates.  I wish you well.  Prayerfully, given time, you may experience recovery.  I am praying for you.

I also had a failed urolift. All these procedures can have complications. I was also perfect candidate, very minor enlarged prostate. I won't go into the details of what happened, initially the surgery was a success I had 3 pins in each side; however 4 days after the surgery the pins came loose caused massive bleeding and the whole thing collapsed. I ended up worse than before the surgery. That was 3 months ago.  I have now had a turp ( 3 days ago) and everything is going great I can finally pee like a race horse.

The only reason I am posting is to make people aware that nothing to do with the bladder and prostate is a given. There can always be complications! If you do have a surgery take it really easy for a couple of months.

Sorry you had a problem...I don't think the surgery failed it was the doctor that put them in.  Let me ask you did he want you to do a different surgery before you had the UROLIFT  Have a good day  Ken

He wanted to do the Uro lift he has done hundreds of them successfully. he said he has seen problems with about 15% of uro lifts but he did say that he sees more complications with turps. The point is to be prepared, I was not and I freaked out when my catheter stopped working and I had to go to emergency. I was expecting an out patient surgery and back to work a couple of days later and that was not what happened.

It's interesting that with a minor enlarged prostate that he felt he needed to use 6 clips.  My prostate is probably larger than yours and my doctor said that 4 clips were more than enough.  I do agree that every procedure, no matter how routine, has its risks.  I'm glad to hear the TURP worked for you and your eventual outcome was positive.

BEFORE doing Urolift which the procedure was and is my worst nightmare. Have a very good chance of developing scar tissue then you need laser surgery then you will have to self cathertize the rest of your life. Dont do it !!! #urolift. Instead which I am doing now PEMF MAGNETIC PULSE THERAPY for prostate problems. I purchased the Sota Magnetic Pulser

It sounds like BS.  Most consumer devices that claim to achieve miracles with magnets, are BS.  IMHO

    Hi Charles,

I just got the Urolift yesterday...without catheter. I have been urgent peeing every  hour  with lots of pain since yesterday. I spoke to the dr today and he said it's normal and will subside..eventually. Was on Finasteride for 8 years and I'm 68. He took me off the Finasteride  after the Urolift. I had frequency issues( 3-4 times night) poor flow. I see each guy has a different story, and optimistic this will improve. If not,  this was a big mistake..he said no exercise or sex for at least a week, I am very active and don't want to live in eye shot of bathrooms..I'll post my experience as it changes. Thanks for this site , it's very good to read about others exeperince with this relatively new procedure.

"..on Finasteride for 8 years .."

Did you have problem with finasteride ? Was it why you decided on Urolift ? Hank

Steve you should be fine in a week.  I had my UROLIFT 2 1/2 years ago.  I had a catheter for 3 days  I have a problem peeing on demand.  Was good in a week had no problem.  My doctor told me no sex of any kind for a month.  They want the implant to a here to the prostate.  I waited 10 days  It was fine had blood in the fluid but that went away.  Try to relax for at least the first week or two.  It will help.  Your only one day out and your prostate has been through He???  Let it heal  Take care  Ken

Hi Steve, hang tough, you'll be fine and happy you had the procedure.  I am 65 and was on Finasteride for 7 or 8 years just like you. After the procedure I was up every hour p*****g razor blades for the first two days and then p****d battery acid for the next two- things slowly get better.  I still burned a little after a month.  It's not like you'll wake up one morning and say, cool I've turned the corner.  It gets fractionally better every day- compare week to week.  I'm now about 6 weeks post-op and, I must say, it is truly life-changing.  I now go 4-5 hours without having to go (day or night).  I took the advice from some of the posters here and stayed out of the gym for 3 weeks and I'm glad I did.  When I started up again I went easy for a week or two.  I'm back to 6 days a week, power, spin, power yoga etc.  I really didn't lose much stamina even after 3 weeks.

      Thanks Ken,

it's been 2 weeks since the Urolift. Tough week without a catheter ..I wish I had one,  peeing was painful for 3-4 days. Getting better every day, better flow,  but still 2-3 hours urgency. Actually experience constipation since the proceedure..wasn't expecting that.

I am hopeful things will regulate soon.

      Best, Steve

      Hi George,

That's good to hear, yes, I feel a little better each day. Went back to the gym in 10 days..but went light. I'm glad to be off the Finasteride. You are 4 weeks ahead of me an I'm encouraged things will start to regulate better. I still am 2-3 hours before urgency.  Seems at night I'm still up every 2-3 hours..I thinking it Is a hard habit to break after years of up every 2 hours. Would love to get 4-5 hours at one time. I'm optimistic and looking forward to improvement and realizing it's a slow process.

Sounds like you are making great progress. Thanks for the input.

      Best, Stevs

It should  I was happy I had a catheter with mine.  3 days first time.  I had pain the first couple of day with the catheter because of the blood clogs.  It hurt but after the catheter was out the first 24 hours burning.  They say it take about a  month.  Take care and just relax  Ken

Two weeks is still really early, you're still swollen.  I'm now usually up once, sometimes twice a night, but there were a few nights I went from 11 PM to 6 AM- the NEVER happened before the procedure.

That is very encouraging George! I'm hoping to follow your recovery time line..Yes, I am still swollen..but not much of any pain while peeing now only 2 weeks out.  Best, Steve
