The weight of a new hip.

A number of members have mentioned that they put on weight after a THR including me. Maybe its because of the long fairly inactive recuperation following the operation and the extra time available to raid the biscuit barrel. Maybe I am looking for an excuse but does anybody know if the new hip mechanism is heavier than the original bone it replaces, or is that just wishful thinking on my part.

i tried that one, was told by someone on the forum that the weight of a THR is just about the same as the bone removed during the op

Yes - I've noticed the comments here about weight gain. Not for me, although I believe that my replacement hip is heavier than my original.
I wasn't able to use my scales at first (too low down to pull them out from under the cabinet!), but have done for the past 4 weeks. I've lost 7 lb in the 7 weeks since my op; pretty steadily a pound a week since I could weigh myself. I've put this down to doing lots of exercises, and the fact that my body is healing itself.
Is anyone else the same? Will it change as time goes by?
Joan

Your body uses more calories when it's in healing mode but obviously you don't want to eat more calories than you burn

The replacement hip is around 3-5 pounds which is slightly heavier than the hip it replaced. So you have an excuse for any weight gain, well a little anyway!

I was lucky enough to hold one, I have a photo of me holding it. I am sure it was slightly heavier than a bag of sugar. But was also told that you would not feel the weight because its being used within your body.

Nar I think it's the biscuit barrel...😀
Good luck with your recovery and even more luck in keeping away from the biscuit barrel.....😊

Hi I did put on weight after my hip op, but that was because of 2 months of not being as physically active and also as I stayed with my parents, I was eating 3 meals a day! I'm normally lucky if I eat 1 meal a day ( I do tend to pick a bit but not junk foods e.g MacDonald etc!) When I went back to work after 2 months and put my uniform on (I'm a carer), my tunic was a bit snug!!!! soon lost a little bit of weight once I got running about at work again!!

The titanium hip is about the same weight as your original one I'm afraid.
Perhaps you had one made from lead or concrete 😉 ..... then you may be a few pounds heavier.

I have grown my hair, I think that's what has increased my weight 😂

That is the trouble with hair really heavy. Long toenails don't help either.

I'll go with your explanation, as we can't get down to our toes to cut the nails. 😉
