    Good Morning Shelley,

I don't know... is my answer !  Not much help....

I'm just going to read your replies, to find out !!

I hope to try giving up the dreaded ' , soon.  I have taken Vitamin B compound supplements in the past... one months supply.  I bought them after reading some "healthy bumpf",  I have never had the Thiamine, as a supplement...what exactly does it help with?

Hi Angel...I was told by the hospital that Thiamine was a "brain" vitamin.  Helps to heal our brains.

When I asked my counsellor that a while ago he said it was a question for my gp. But although I drink far less than I used to I still drink quite a lot and my gp keeps prescribing them. I'll be interested to see what other people say. Good question.

It really depends on the individual and the circumstances. Aswell as my drug medications, I take Vitamin B compound strong, Thiamine and Folic Acid. It's coming up to two years for me, but mine are on prescription. Also I am not mister average.

As a rough guideline, if you have given up alcohol completely, I would carry on for about three months afterwards, giving your body time to replenish its supplies. If you do not eat healthily, I would take them for longer, if you start drinking again, I would start taking them again.

Vitamin B Co Strong also helps with PAWS which can last up to a year and Thiamine helps with fatigue. Folic acid works with Thiamine to help to ensure proper metabolism.

Shelley ...I was in very rough shape...almost dead...and they started the vitamin supplements via...IV in the hospital.  I continued to take the vitamins when I got home...then about 3 weeks later...I went to my Dr. for a follow up and blood work.

My Dr. told me that I need not take those vitamins for more than 2 weeks and that I had higher levels of them in my system than needed.  Hope that helps.

Hi, ive been prescibed this, thiamine and a vit b tablet, apparently they are to help your brain.

I thought thiamine and folic acid are forms of vitamin B? Maybe you need higher doses of these than in your average compound VB?

Folic acid is not a vitamin, even though it is treated as one.

Vitamin B compound strong contains Thiamine, but low doses. Most recovering drinkers require large doses of Thiamine, vitamin B complex usually contains something like 5mg of Thiamine, but Thiamine tablets usually contain 100mg+ and often are prescribed at more than one a day.

Hi thanks to you all. I'm on 2 vit b compound three times a day and 150mg of Thiamine daily. I have been for about 2 months. I was thinking of carrying on for 3 months after stopping drinking. Just wanted others thoughts so thank you.
