Thigh Haematoma pain

Bit of background first. I fell off a ladder (yes, silly me) about 10 days ago now. The ladder slid out from under me and I landed horizontal on the ladder with my arms outstretched so all the injuries were on my legs and inside of my arms.
So just bruising on my arms...big haematomas on my shin (which is fine now but swelled up like a golf ball in about 10 seconds!) and on my left thigh in two places.
My thigh is the area still giving me problems. It was really sore for about 3 days...could hardly walk although didn't come up in a hige bruise. Just some yellowing.
The past 3 or 4 days I can walk OK...just a hint of a limp. Keeping the leg still there is basically no pain. But every time the thigh is still for a period of time, and then I move, it is incredibly painful for about 15-30 seconds and then the pain goes away again.
Happens in my sleep which is annoying. Laying in one position is fine, then if I rollover, the pain returns and then goes away again.
Is this a normal part of the recuperation? The thigh took a pretty significant impact so I expect there's some goo bruising there. But just this intermittent pain seems strange.
Don't want to go to the doc and him say I need an MRI. They are VERY expensive and I can't afford one just for a sore leg at the moment.
Thanks in advance

Yikes Rob, nasty accident. An Xray would show up any fractures that might have happened as a result if the impact to the thigh bone which would account for the pain. I'd say that's be your first call before thinking bout an mri. I had a fall cpl months ago onto my knees and have bad pain mid thigh on various movements. Had an mri of knees, thigh and hip but nothing showed up for thigh so must be muscle damage. So maybe the same for you although I feel in your case given the nature of the accident sounds more bone like to me. My brother had the same type of accident and had a suspected broken thigh bone but turned out not broken. Can recall he'd alot of pain for some time. I'll ask him tomorrow about it and let you know what it was like and if you think it is similar. He also broke his wrist in 8 places!!

Hi Rob, it certainly matches one of my shins - don't laugh anone,I fell off a kerb and onto my rollator some months ago and my right shin took the force of the fall driving one of the struts into my right shin. (I have to say that if the rollator hadn't broken my fall, I probably wouldn't be here now as I was walking round a housing estate with unmade-up concrete roads).
That was 4 months ago and I'm still having to go to the surgery twice a week for dressings...........so tedious, but I'm glad it isn't worse.
Your intermittent pain is odd, though. Could you have torn some of the soft tissue around the bone?

You very probably have some deep bruising and only saw superficial effects so there may still be bruising healing. And muscle fibres that are healing might start to hurt as you move them, in much the same way PMR stiffness is there until you get moving again.
Just as well the Elves from Safety weren't around to have you for not having the ladder secured...

Thanks for the responses everyone.
Pretty certain it's not bone damage. I can put significant pressure on it without any pain so I guess that's a good sign.
The area is still tender so I suspect very deep bruising and possibly some muscle damage...which is probably just a grin and bear it situation.
I can handle the tender thigh...it's really just the pain when I have the leg stationary in one position for a while and then move positions. Even if I do it slowly and carefully, it's just the shift in position that causes the pain.
Wondering if that could be the blood movement when I change position that is causing the pain?

Not sure what you mean - your blood is moving all the time! You'd be dead if it weren't!
If you stop and think about it - even sitting with an injury can result in considerable discomfort when you move. In bed you are probably moving even less.

Hehe...I was probably meaning a blood rush around the area if I need to use the muscle.

I think it is more the muscle stiffening and the nerves being disturbed when you move!

I took a blow to my thigh when I/ fell of of my bike into a sharp tree stump while riding in snow.
My symptoms were a lot like yours, especially discomfort while sleeping.
After a coule of weeks I took a jog to the store and sort of over-did it when a sharp pain appeared briefly. I thought that I'd torn the muscle.
The next day though my painwas improving, and I noticed a darkening of the skin on my lower leg. What happened was that an intra-muscular hematoma had burst when I went jogging, relieving the pressure that had caused much discomfort. I quickly recovered fully and the discoloration and discomfort were soon all gone.
