Thigh - Joint Pain

I'm 2 weeks post op. Staples out yesterday. Incision is closed and looks fine. I've been having some pain in the front of my thigh. Groin area? I read several posts earlier about possibly the muscle healing etc. i took pain meds twice today but then stopped because I didn't feel they were working all that great plus a general desire to stop them altogether. I stopped the anti inflammatory on Wednesday I think - again I was still having pain and as with the heavier dose of pain meds slight nausea - or just not feeling great. Didn't want to keep taking meds if they were not working. So, I was sleepy from earlier pain meds - in bed by 8:30 tonight. Woke about 10:30. Leg hurting to where I needed to use walker instead of cane to get to bathroom. I'm having to physically lift my leg where days before I could just lift to get in and out if bed. I can tell there is still some swelling in butt. Could this be inflammation related pain? Going back on anti inflammatory and pain meds for the weekend. Thoughts? Experiences? Had been doing great prior to this. Therapist was surprised at my progress. Thanks.

    Hi Etta

I'm now 20 weeks post-op & also had this same muscle problem. The surgeon explained that I had a small incision which meant he had to move & stretch the main sartorius muscle in my thigh as it was in the way during surgery. The sartorius muscle runs up your bum, over the hip, down into the groin & down your thigh. If you have a search on the net you'll be able to see what I mean. I had some ultra sound treatment on it by my Physio & she advised me to buy a small hand held massage tool which I used for a few minutes 3 times a day. It's done the trick because the pain has now gone. Good luck x

Thank you darling - now my muscle has a name -

sartorius muscle - for some reason it still feels short, or tight or something which makes it uncomfortable to left knees or legs ..

PT is deep massaging them at the moment to release connective tissue -

Did PT give you special exercises ...

Morphine type pain killers will make alot of people feel sick, that doens;t mean you can;t take normal over the counter type painkillers, panadol for example, but taking them occasionally is going to do little good.  You need to build up enough in your blood stream for them to be effective, Don't overdose as even panadol can kill you in overdose situation, and even panadol has a mild anti-inflamation effect, or it does for me.

You sound to me as though you are doing amazing well, but have you done too much, you body will stop you with pain and just feeling exhausted, you do need time to heal those muscles that have been cut, wrenched, when they have dislocated your hip, and stolen the marrow in your bone to make room for the prothesis, and that marrow makes you red blood cells, they are what carries you oxygen to muscles. REST REST and more rest is what you need at this stage, give your body a chance to do its healing.

Pain could be from tourniquet and swelling, take it slow.

Hi there. I had very similar experience in my hip recovery, I'm 4 weeks post op but had terrible thigh pain at 2 weeks and get groin pain. Swelling is still evident around same areas. My advice is don't pack in the pain relief. Continue strengthening those muscles with your leg exercises. I put a heat pack on my thigh and across groin when I go to bed. It'll improve and I'm learning to be patient. I went out yesterday with my daughter in the car and went to the shop for 1st potter and I'm feeling it today. Keep positive x X

Sorry to hear that you in that much pain. Thr surgery has many ups and downs. It's so frustrating. Many days are off while following thru with exercises on a small basis is very helpful.

i assume u have been in for X-rays and the doc has evaluated the surgery that all is aligned and going well.

take it slow until you feel better many days are full of disappointment but once we get thru the initial 3/6 weeks life becomes to be much better. Heeling takes time a the bone grows thru the implant to stabalize the components.

Many my blessings and well wishes sent your way!

Hi, I would keep on with the pain meds. I was prescribed them 4 times a day, codeine and paracetamol. After about 10 days I cut them down to twice a day, and at 4 weeks stopped them. There's no point in being in pain. Take it easy. Wishing you well.

    hi etta,

I agree, you are doing amazingly well - might be a bit too early to stop pain medication but many have done so --- we are so eager to stop out of fear of getting addicted - at least I was - then I realized (and read here on the forum) how important it was to be in less pain and being able to stay mobile and do the exercises - and the importance of taking the meds on schedule as precribed -

I don't remember what kind of THR procedure you had ... I had posterior and apparently about 22 muscles/tendons were severed to expose the hip joint - and this was just the beginning ...

be gentle with etta, and tender loving care is what she needs okay?

it is okay and know that all is well -

of course when pain gets worse or you get a fever, please contact your doctor asap ....

and come back here any time ...

    big warm hug

    renee

Give it time and take pain Meds every 4 hours so pain does not get ahead of you . Use ice to help with pain and do your exercises. It does get better but you have to rest and take your time. I am 7 weeks out still have some pain but getting better everyday . Good luck

    Hi EttaH

i am 11 days post op clips coming out on Monday. I know how you are feeling I have thigh pain and often severe hip pain which is affecting my mobility. I know it is related to medication but I am terrified I am taking too many l am going over the prescribed number of codeine and paracetamol every day just to make pain bearable and so l cut back and end up in severe pain again like today which has been a horrible day hardly able to move at all. I think we all feel we should be better than we are and don't take enough time to rest and heal.Hip replacement is definitely not a walk in the park it is painful to the extreme but surely it has to be all worth it eventually.

Hope you feel more pain free soon

    Onwards and Upwards!!! X

Hi Estate! Same with me. I'm 16 days post op Doing great on walker so switched to cane. After 2 days I could hardly walk with op leg. I too am off pain meds - just over the counter. Saw my therapist yesterday and she used heat ob the thigh muscle...felt sooooo good. Did some massaging and then she taped it to limit movement slightly . She recommended alternating heat/Ice to the thigh muscle and reevaluate on Monday. I also had to have my leg lengthened 1 inch during surgery due to malformed femur so I'm hoping my pain is stretching to accommodate the new leg lengthening. Other than the thigh muscle I'm doing super! No drugs, sleeping all night, driving and getting more independent everyday. Good luck to you - hope it gets better!!
