Thigh / Knee pain 2 months after THR surgery

Hi - I had my THR about 2 months ago. I am 57 yrs old. My recovery has been going very well until recently. I had been walking mostly without a cane until a few days ago. Lately, I have had a problem with thigh pain when walking. The pain is strong enough that I have gone back to using a walker.

The pain occurs as I am stepping forward and put my weight down on my leg. My leg is straight and moderately stiff at that time. My thigh and hip muscles have become tense as a result.

There is no pain at all when the knee is bent, and no pain at all while sitting or lying down. The pain only occurs when I am walking.

Using a walker has reduced the pain while walking, but the pain is not getting any better.

What can I do at this point?

Hi Alan - I had a LTHR mid December and five  weeks on was almost painfree and walking round the house without the sticks - decided to walk up to the post without the sticks - it's about half a mile there and back . The next day I had that thigh pain you described and was very anxious in case I had done some damage , but like you  it was only when I was walking. So for the last two weeks I have gone back to the sticks ,one in the house and two on the road- it's a country road outside the house with a very uneven surface. I think the tissues muscles and ligaments all heal in stages. I went on another site and there was a diagram with the healing times , and I realised that because the pain was so much improved from pre-op days I wasn't allowing enough recovery time for the actual physical process of healing. Because I'm 73 I have no pressures about getting back to work, which does make life easier.  I have OA in other joints, but the necessary post op rest the past two months has definitely helped relieve them. Thank you Hope , Renee and Susan and all you other hippies too , this has been a very helpful thread. Good luck, Alan, hope it improves soon.

wow Clare you hit the nail on the head. It takes muscles and tendons almost a year to heal from the last three I had done. So stay with your system and great advice so very helpful. Thank you !

      Hopexxx
