Thigh muscle cramp

Posted , 125 users are following.

I have often had calf muscle cramp, but this is easily dealt with by walking about. However, last night I had a thigh muscle cramp which was far more acute than anything I had had before. The pain was excruciating and lasted ten minutes. My face went grey and I almost fainted. I couldn't walk and massaging seemed to have little effect.

Alan1000 - also know the anxiety of anticipation and "what if" ... due to post colon cancer and an entirely unreliable colon !!!! What if I can't get to the loo is my panic button. Good luck... and I do wish we could find a doc or medical group who had not only All the answers, but just One, would be a great start. Some facts, and more recognition.

I have had these thigh cramps for a few years - usually at night or early morn -in either thigh -for NO discernable reason. The pain and fright is INTENSE as we all know. My own research has led me to start taking sublingual B12 methylcobalamin  (not cyano) at the very first twinge that one is coming on - I keep it on my nightstand - very handy - cause you only get seconds to react, and I carry some with me at all times in my purse. I find that the sublingual (dissolves under the tongue) is extremely fast acting and I can supress the cramp (and pain) in a very very short time. This discovery has been a life changer for me. The cramps still come, but the duration is MUCH less. I take 1000 mcg (cause I try to take the least amount of anything that will work, but have read you can safely take much more) I have sometimes dissolved 2 or 3 tabs cause it happens to be an extremely intense cramp. I hope this may help some of you. My Dr. has no answers and no one I know personally has this problem. I am a relatively healthy, normally active 55 yr old woman who eats a well balanced diet. I can't figure out in myself what may be causing this either.

had a terrible bout of thigh thing last nite.  made me cry.  i am already taking reg. b-12 tabs 400 mg day but I will talk to my doc next week and ask about the B12 methyl - thanks and I know what you are going thru

Lola - methyl is the form of B12 the body needs. It is better absorbed and retained in higher amounts in the tissues.  Please read up on the differences and you will not take cyano again! Cyano is cheap and that is the primary reason it is found in most multi vitamins or on the shelf. Sublingual makes it be absorbed quickly into the system - not having to wait for digestion.

I was frequently getting cramp Toes, top of foot arch, calf , and back of thigh muscles. I found that keeping a spongy ball( about tennis ball size) on bedside table helps by rolling firmly around all areas under foot helps relieve it. However it progressively got worse So many aching muscles from shoulders to toes. waddling gait. Unable climb or descend stairs, weak leg muscles. I was eventually diagnosed with low VitaminD and since taking 100mcg + Magnesium 375mg a day I have been able to sleep relatively undisturbed by cramp

Hello Penny:  thanks for all that info.  I'm taking Vit.D  and now Magnesium, plus, the combo of Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM - all from the Health store.  Wasn't ever into that much ... but so far .... good!

One of my dear Kiwi friends had had her friend suggest putting some CORKS (!!!) in a muslin bag, and PUT THEM INTO YOUR BED  !!!!  I truly haven't tried that .... yet.   She reckons it was so effective.   Will have to get hubby to buy some wine ... I'm sure he won't mind at all.  All the best to all those who suffer this thing.

I have been on here for  a while know...It is amazing to see the amount of peole having EXACTLY the same HORRIBLE situation...DRS . HAVE NO CLUE and we are on ur own here.   I have sufferend for 14 years from this.  All of our stories are exaactly the same.  and those taling about calf craps...you all have NO CLUE.   this is a calf cramp times 100!

AFTER YEARS OF TRIAL AND ERROR...here is the cocktail i use and it seems to work.  haven't had a muscle attack in 5 months....   Mag Taurate   (i use cardio vassculer research)   I take 2 in am and 2 before bed...Now this has a laxitive effect so you need iron with with....So i take 1 of the WHOLE FOOD VItEmeN   ALIVE with the AM & PM  dose...also suppliment this with potassium, one in am on at night

    easier:

    when i have breakfast

    2 mag taurate

1 ALIVe (muliti vit w/ IRON to combat the loose stool effects)

    1 potassium

at dinner i take the same combination.   It seems to be working well...( if you eat late you may want to leave out the ALIVE,  the vits sometimes make it hard to sleep.)

gUYS THIS WILL WORK...anD i AM SO THANK FUL TO HAVE FOUNF THIS GROUP.   i HAVE BEEN TO DOZENS OF DRS....  they tested me for MS...and actually my friend with MS has started on this regimine and it is helping her symptoms...If yu are taking meds for heart or high BP...make sure you ask you DR first.    This ALIVE is a WHOLE FOOD SUPPLIMENT... It is packed with veggies and fruits.

I am very driven to find a solution...having n of these attacks in front of my 5 year old grandchild scared him to pieces...a year later he till is talking about it.   he grabbed my cell phone and ...bless his little heart...dialed 911...it was so smart of him...but they could do nothing...they were stumped as well...cuz s well all know...when it is over...it is over...but we feel beat up for days following..

I believe the reason we are having such a increae in people witH these symptoms is OUR FOOD...The land is worN out.   $$$$ ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN ROTATING CROPS AND THEY DID IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS.  tHE SOIL CAN NOT REPLENISH ITSELF   ...ooops cap lock...sorry...So i have started going regularly to farmers market and buying from farmers drectly...organic   and putting KALE in everything!

I hope this helps...I'm not a expert, I am a fellow sufferer, be blessed, try it...I think it will work

OH AND CARRY A PACKET WITH YOU,   I MADE UP  SOME LITTLE PLASTIC BAGGIES OF THIS COMBO I CARRY IN MY PURSE...IF YOU FEEL IT COMEING ON TAKE AMOTHER DOSE.  AND THERE IS

I get you.  had horrible attack last nite and i just stood there cause you cannot walk about with thigh pain like you can with calf spasms because the pain is so excruciating.  i massage, rub and punch too.  made me cry.  it lasted abt 10 min like yours.   i drank a ton of water in evening because my calf cramps are back which i do think the water helps, but then i got the thigh thing so I know water does not matter with thighs.  good luck

I'm sooo glad I am not alone with this, I thought I was totally alone. Last night I suffered an attack on both thighs for the first time. Previously it had always been one or the other. It was the most excruciating thing I have ever experienced and I've suffered with kidney stones!!.....the pain was so bad I threw up, can you imagine trying to get to the bathroom when you can barely walk and feel like you are about to pass out?...people who are reading this and have suffered with calf cramp must think us people who have suffered with our thighs are wimps but as someone already mentioned above ... IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL GAME!!!..I am sitting here with all the signs that it is going to happen again tonight and I am terrified!..as with others it mostly happens after getting up out of an armchair, or while changing position in bed. I came on here to look for answers and to see if anyone had any ideas for prevention or what to do best when having one of these attacks. The best idea I have been given in the past was to stretch the muscle out (before an attack) by pushing against a wall at arms length with leg stretched out behind a heel on the floor. It helps me if I can feel it coming on but those of us who suffer with this know that you don't often have time. I would do it anyway, just in case. Please if anyone has any other remedies for this excruciating predicament , please, please share!....thank you for reading, I don't feel alone anymore, and remember when you are going through another attack that there are people out here who know exactly what you are going through. Wishing you all an attack free nite folks.

I've just found this site and am relieved to find that I am not the only one with this problem. I have been getting these cramps for a while now but only occasionally (which is bad enough!). Last night I had excruciating inner thigh cramp in both legs 5 TIMES! on the first occasion it started in the right leg, as I got out of bed it started in the left leg and then went down to my ankle too. I was in agony, felt really sick and as others have said felt as though I was going to pass out. I walked back and forth up and down the passage, went down the stairs to get some tonic water, drank loads and struggled back up the stairs - it lasted I would say at least 15 mins. Really scary as I was on my own last night, but at least I knew at some point it would end. Every time I moved or turned over in bed it started again. The tonic water didn't seem to help at all. I also have fibromyalgia and take 10mg Amitriptilyne and 50mg of Lyrica at night if necessary (yesterday was a crazy day and I got home late, cold and wet after running around after dogs and ponies all day - my life is mad! + the battery on my car was flat so had to wait for the AA to come and rescue me too - not a good day!) I wonder if this was caused by muscle exhaustion and dehydration. The magnesium mention is interesting too. I am terrified it will happen again tonight now. is there anything I can do to prevent this?

      Hi Sarah

I had a thigh rolleyesbout last nite ON THE BOWL.  what fun that was.  and that happened while i was also having painful cramp in left thigh.  YOU ARE NOT ALONE.  i gave up on all the "remedies" as so far nothing has stopped them.  fortunately - the thigh ones are once in while unlike the calf spasms can be every other nite.  at least with the calf you can walk around, with the thigh NOTHING helps until it runs its course.  wish i could add more to help you.  good luck - lorie USA

Please try vitamin B12 - It MUST be methylcobalamin NOT cyanocobalamin (which is a cheaper but ineffective type which is actually not good for you at all) and get the sublingual type that you dissolve under your tongue so it enters the system immediately.  I swear by the results. Whenever I begin to get a cramp I take one (or two) and within a very short time - must be a minute or so - but havent looked at the clock, but it is a VERY short time - the cramping dissipates.  I can't live without it and keep a bottle on my nighttable for when I feel a cramp coming on. B12 has to due with nerves and that is what causes muscles to cramp - nerve action. It is completely safe to take too. I usually use 1000 mcg, but have taken more than one when I feel the cramp to be a bad one. Please try it - it can't hurt !!!!!!!!!

I just bought a bunch of the sublinguals (non-cyan)  and will have to keep them at arms length.  I have been taking b-12 1000mg pink chewable tabs but it was the  cyan.....   the ones i have now are not cyan but the other and are sublingual. just dont want to take more than i should - i take the chewable b-12 in am with my other pills.  not sure if taking more at night is good to do?????   thanks for the response smile

From what I have read - there is no upper limit to the amount of B12. Pills seem to usually be 1000 to  5000 mcg. I always opt for the least effective amount first so I take the 1000 mcg but when the cramping is really bad or I feel it beginning in both thighs at the same time - I have taken 3000 mcg. Since they sell 5000 mcg pills I feel I am at a safe number. But once again I must say that it should be methylcobalamin NOT cyanocobalamin which contains a derivative of cyanide which is not good and also ineffective - its cheap to produce in the lab so thats the kind that is put into most all products - multivitamins, cereal etc. Its cost effective for the pharmaceutical companies to produce and then the manufacturers are able to say "fortified with B12!!" which sounds good to the consumer as a selling point. Read up on the difference between cyano and methyl and also the use of B12 for cramping. I am so  glad I did cause it does seem to work for me - so far it seems a safe and effective method to help with the unbelievable horrid cramping pain that no one seems to know what the actual cause is !!!!  Must just be from my aging !!! metabolism.
