Thigh muscle cramp

Posted , 125 users are following.

I have often had calf muscle cramp, but this is easily dealt with by walking about. However, last night I had a thigh muscle cramp which was far more acute than anything I had had before. The pain was excruciating and lasted ten minutes. My face went grey and I almost fainted. I couldn't walk and massaging seemed to have little effect.

I have also suffered these thigh cramps and feel sick and nearly faint.  Why is it that we cannot get any advice as to what to do to help relieve the pain.  Surely modern medicine as it is today we can send a man to the moon but cannot soothe these cramps.  Come on Docs lets have some answers.

God bless you, my fellow hamstring cramp sufferers!  I've been dealing with this enigma for 11 years.  I've been to several doctors, specialized sports docs, physical therapists, massage...they still don't know what's going on.  It is, by far, the most excruiating pain i've ever felt - so much so that they give me full blown anxiety/panic attacks when i feel one coming on.  Crying, yelling/screaming, hyperventilating, sweating, oh yeah, the whole deal.  I typically experience them when moving from a seated position to standing though just last Sunday, i got my first one while lying in bed asleep.  I've had many happen in public places (movie theater, getting up from the table at restaurants, my cousins' wedding, at work...) ugh...horribly embarrassing because you are at the cramp's whim.  There is no 'walk it off' when it comes to hamstring cramps.  I just recently had blood drawn for testing and my Vitamin D level was very low (7!) again.  So, i'm on the megadose for that now.  I've been doing stretches multiple times daily for years, they really don't seem to help at all. My hamstrings are always tight (especially my right leg). I had an MRI done of my spine and i have a slight bulging disc.  My doc seems to think this is causing nerve impingement and it's causing my nerves to send errant signals to my hamstrings.  So, because my hamstrings always feel somewhat engaged, they tire and are weakened...which causes them to cramp. Sounds legit...but how do you FIX IT?!?!  I don't know if any of you have had any similar diagnosis (or medical guesses) as to the cause of it. I also have a bit of arthritis in my spine, L3,4,5.  In desperation, i went and had an epidural and a shot of cortizone in that area (praying to GOD that it would fix me) but it did nothing.  Living with this is horrible...it dictates so much of my life!  I'm going to try the sublingual B12-Methyl and see what that does. I'll try anything!

Samantha: I had these cramps for years and finally found that if I took a CalciumMagnesium tablet( available without prescription) about every 2 weeks I no longer got them. If i did get one I immediately took a calcium magnesium tablet and that relieved the cramp within a very short time.

I carry a tablet with me at all times just in case but have never had to use it . I hope this will work for you as I know the agony that is suffered with one of these attacks

Hi Tom!  Thanks so much for your reply.  I'll try the calcium magnesium tablet.  I'd drink horse urine if i thought it'd banish these horrible cramps!  Thing is, and I don't suspect you're a doctor but i'll ask anyway, i JUST had bloodwork done last week and the results for my calcium level was good, 9.9 (normal is 8.6 - 10.2 mg/dl).  I'm concerned about taking in too much calcium as i think i read that THAT can build up in your muscles and cause cramping as well.  These tablets, they're a combo pill?  I have them seperately.  What's the amount of milligrams for each component?

Samantha: The pills I get are  over the counter "Jamieson Calcium Magnesium"  A bottle of 100ntablets is about $ 5.00 (Canadian)

      elemental calcium.......333mg

      magnesium................167 mg

On the bottle the recommended dosage is 1-3 pills daily I only take one pill every couple of weeks and have never had any side effects .

I got the following information from a medical website!!!

'An adequate daily intake of calcium (1,000-1,200 mg) along with magnesium and potassium works to control blood pressure by helping to regulate the amount of sodium your body retains. Most of us get all the potassium we need from fresh fruits (especially bananas) and vegetables. (Don’t take potassium supplements unless a doctor has prescribed them.) Taking too much calcium (three to four times the usual dose) can lead to such side effects as constipation, dry mouth, a continuing headache, increased thirst, irritability, loss of appetite, depression, a metallic taste in the mouth, and fatigue.'

      I hope this helps

I do sympathise whole heartedly! It is just the most excruciating pain and no one understands if they have never had it! I have had them often over the years - always when I have not drunk enough water and I am tired! I remember a bad one at a Cricket dinner during the main speech! In cinemas - I always have to have an end seat!  The worst place is on a plane! Air hostesses do not know what is the matter or understand  - absolutely useless they are!i ask them for a bag of ice and they think I am mad!   I only met one air hostess who did and she was on a long haul flight from South Africa to UK - she gave me something similar to Syndol which has a tiny amount of relaxant in. Unfortunately Syndol is unavailable as we knew it - they are bringing it back without that magic relaxant in and still calling it Syndol - which is such a shame.

i had the most dreadful thigh cramp in both tops of thighs just the other night woke me from sleep - the pain was so excruciating  I could hardly move forward - it made my eyes water and I was sick! I drag myself downstairs balancing on each step by my toes to try to stretch my muscles and then drink lots of water .Take 2 Syndol ( I only have a few left now) - I am not sure now if it is psychological but the minite I take the Syndol the pain starts to ebb away . I will then have a slight pain there for a couple of days - I could pinpoint the place where the cramp was 2 days later! I have Haemochromatosis  and I have always blamed that - which causes arthritis and my daughter also has it and she had trouble with her back - when she had lots of tests as well as a high ferritin she was low in vitamin d ( she was only 30 years at the time!).my husband and younger daughter also have been diagnosed with haemochromatosis and we all suffer  cramps in our hands and toes.the worst of them all is the thigh cramp - I once asked a consultant what should I do when I get one and he said - ( he obviously had never had a cramping of anything in his life!)  sit on the floor cross legged - pull one foot towards you alternating with the other foot - send 1 person for a bag of frozen peas and the other for a gin and tonic!! That has to be the most annoying advice I have ever been given because it would be impossible to complete his instructions when in full thigh cramp situation!  so I need to find something similar to the original Syndol - maybe it is sold in America or maybe South Africa still will have to investigate! If you do drink tonic water make sure it has the natural Quinine in rather than non at all or the chemical one - read the label. It doesn't really do much for me anyway.  Surely some Doctor reading all our thigh cramp problems could just offer a standard answer we could all try?? Come on you medical people please offer some inspiration?? Until then I shall guard my remaining Syndol like a lion with her cubs until I can find something similar!

We have the same Syndol you have in the UK.  The original had doxylamine (hope the spelling is right) it was removed, other than that, it's the same as original.

Terri, the cramp is related to restless leg syndrome. Get ropinrole from doc. It will prevent the cramps.

Is this website monitored by anyone in the medical field?  It states in the header "Trusted medical information and support."  I definitely feel the support (thank you!) but i don't see any doctor/nurse/etc imput.  I find it extremely sad to read all these posts from people suffering from something they don't know the exact cause of or the treatment for.  I also find it somewhat infuriating that everyone's doctor seems to think we're all giant babies with low pain thresholds and don't give us any solid cause and effect...or solutions! We're certainly providing job security to the vitamin manufacturing & distribution companies in our desperation to find the right combos of whatever will take this wretched pain away.  I've done stretching exercises and massage EVERY SINGLE DAY, multiple times a day and yet i have pain in the back of my right thigh (hamstrings) EVERY SINGLE DAY for the past 11 years.  The cramps happen every few months or longer (if they were or ever became a daily thing, i would very seriously consider suicide).  Totally sporadic...but the ache and random 'surge' or tightening feeling like one is about to come on with the next movement i make is with me nearly all the time.  The panic attacks, either before or during the cramp make everything worse. Nightmarish.  I went and bought a bottle of Calcium/Magnesium/Iron pills, took 3 last night (in the car at the drugstore parking lot!).  Don't feel any difference yet.  I'll keep at them..

Hey Samantha....I've had this nearly 15 years...I have tried every brand of lit minerals out there....

Here are two that eill work.....Cardiovascular research....take as directed.  And I take extra dose when you feel that first flicker of   "pain"     coming on.....there is another product ....the pharmacist said it's made by the same company... SYNGENIC.  ACTIVATED IRONIC MAGNESIUM CREME ...you only use a little of that....I rub it on my inner thighs when I go to bed..

If you will try these I think it may help you....it has me....I have wasted hundreds on different brands if mag...none worked....within 10 mins of taking the above product.... pain went away...didn't get the  attack!  The vitamin D was recommended to help the absorption of magnesium....please try these...uf you don't have a health food store that carries them...you can get online....DON'T LET THEM TALK YOU INTO A DIFFERENT PRODUCT...THEY DON'T WORK....I have a shoebox full of magnesium bottles that didn't work....can't tell you why this combo works...but it does....the bbottle is about 30$    the creme was 22$....if you use it regularly you won't get the attacks!    And I have considered shooting myself when these go on for 30 mins.

I will pray that you are able to find these...I believe it will help you....Terri

I experienced a cold sweat and trembling.  Lasted several minutes, probably 3 or 4 but felt like 10 !!  I couldn't walk either nor sit.  It happened in the bathroom, so I braced myself with the countertop writhing in pain.  My husband wanted to massage, but I couldn't stand being touched (poor guy felt helpless).  I asked for an Aleve and bottles of water. Unsure if these worked to ease the pain, but it finally relented.
