Thigh Pain

Posted , 10 users are following.

Had a total replacement 10 days ago.  For the last 4 nights about midnight I have had sciatica type pains in my thigh. It lasts for a couple of hours and doesn't respond to pain relief.  If I get up in the night then the same thing happens when I get back in bed.

I have seen one comment suggesting tonic water but am not convinced it helps.

Any ideas why it's happening any ideas to help?

I'm sorry to hear this is happening. I wonder if it's a trapped nerve. Does it help if you put a pillow or cushion under the leg? As you're probably still taking pain killers can you increase them at night or ask your doctor to prescribe a stronger pain killer because of what's happening? Would a heat / ice pack help?

This is probably short lived but awful when it happens. I remember having severe insomnia after my hip replacement. It went on for weeks but it seemed like years.... Ask your doctor or go back to the surgeon who did this, I'm sure they can help. Alternatively, ring the hospital where you had it done, they should be able to offer you help.

I hope you soon get relief from this pain.

    Regards,

    Pat

Can you be a bit more descriptive about the pain?

You said it is your thigh, is it the front of your leg, is it strictly only in the thigh or does it go up to the groin? is it on the side of your thigh ? the back of the thigh? Does it go up your butt cheek? Does it end at the knee?

Does it come on only when you are laying in bed?, sitting? Standing?

I don't think I would have any information for you but perhaps if you provide a little bit more detail others could help you.

      Hi Jodi

Had to give it a couple of nights to try and get more information.

The pain can be in the front of my thigh, the front of my shin and also the groin.  As yet it is no better or worse but is stopping me sleeping and only comes on at night. It doesn't respond to pain relief but I am trying tonic water. If I get up in the night to go to the loo the whole cycle starts again.

      any ideas greatly appreciated.

Welcome to our family of hippies where you can come anytime with questions and concerns.

I am so sorry about your pain ... interesting that it occurs around the same time or actually when you get into bed -  did you change getting in to bed or doing something right before ?

if it persists or gets worse, please contact your doctor ...

take care and be gentle with yourself right now -

    warm hug

    Hi Isabella,

I had a THR 22 days ago, and I didnt notice those pains in hospital but when I got back home I had the same pricking and tingling feeling up my thigh, although not on the scar area.  It felt like burning every time I got up in the night.  I asked my mum as she has had a THR but she said different sensations are common and to keep my eye on it.

I am happy to report into my 3rd week and these nightly sensations are now subsiding a lot, and it certainly doesn't hurt like it did the first 2 weeks.  So fingers crossed yours will be the same.  I felt it was almost like nerve endings getting hot and sensitive.

I just rubbed my thigh a bit when I got back in bed, until the feelings subsided or became less painful.

Sorry it doesn't help much, but hopefully should get better soon.

    best wishes

Tonic water with quinine. Is what my doctor suggested for cramps in muscles.

Nerve pain for me did not respond to regular pain medications.

However gabapentin does work. So maybe you can discuss with ur doctor.

Hi, I am 8 days post op and for the past 3 nights have been awake at least 4-5 hrs. I go to bed at about 10pm and like a switch, the pain is turned on about 12:30 or so. Pain meds have no effect at all. I was never a back sleeper before surgery so I blame alot of it on that. It's almost like a muscle spasm or cramp in my thigh! And not where the incision is, the pain is more in the front. I had posterior surgery right thru the butt cheek. I cant bring myself to lay on my incision yet but have laid on the non op side with a large pillow between my knees and an ice pack on my op site. Also, when I lay on my back, I put a pillow under my surgical side knee and it helps to pull the muscle they cut and makes it not feel like it's cramping. Also try elevating your back and head more. I also have a TENS unit that helps with alot of the nerve pain, tingling, and throbbing feelings. I hope you get some relief. I'm 50 and have grandchildren over all the time so I REALLY like my sleep at night! neutral

    Hi Isabella,

I'm sorry you are having so much discomfort.  You might ask your doctor to prescribe some muscle relaxers for this.  I had the same problem and that really helped.  The pain meds didn't really help.

the first two weeks are tough, so hang in there.  It will get easier every day.

    Hugs,

    Judy
