Thigh pain

I had THR 12 days ago. The pain in the lateral thigh is crippling!! The area is 4 inches away from the incision and it is totally numb to the touch but pain prevents me from putting weight on the leg! Has anyone else experienced any thing like this? I can't make sense of it.

    Hi Marie

    I feel for you.

It sounds like nerve or tendon issue.  Might be a good idea to see your surgeon.

Sorry you're having pain. I would get in touch with my orthopedic surgeon asap.

    Take care,

A THR is amputation of the hip joint and insertion of prostheses - a really big deal! Much injury was done to bones and soft tissue to get this done. Heavy-duty pain is expected for a number of weeks, and sometimes months. It sounds like you are undermedicated. Are you taking adequate painkillers, around the clock as prescribed? I was on a big dose of opioids for 4 weeks, round the clock, weaning from them on the 5th week.

AnnieK, I was on Tylenol and tramadol which made me dizzy and nauseous. I became a nasty patient because the pain was unbearable! They now have me on 2.5 mg oxycodone every 4 hrs as needed with Tylenol.

It is much harder to keep pain under control if you wait until you feel pain to take the med. After a major surgery, it is effective for most people to take an adequate amount of medication at regular intervals. If it's working, then your pain will be greatly relieved all the time. If you only take "as needed", then does that mean that you wait until the pain gets severe again after the med wears off, and then take it again? Playing catch-up with pain is a losing game!

Eventually, the meds are not needed, but until that time, they just are. I had nausea with opioids, so I took an anti-nausea med for awhile until my body adjusted. And I'll take dizziness over severe pain any day! It passes quickly. Your dose sounds very small to me, so I hope you have enough to give you relief, Marie!

I don't control my meds. I am in a rehab facility because I live alone and have stairs to get into my home. I get meds every 4 hours but I have to ask for them. The problem is I get only 2 hrs of relief if any.

I was in a rehab facility for 2 1/2 weeks after my second hip surgery. If you only get 2 hours relief from pain and are in bad pain for 2 more hours, then you can inform the staff, who could then inform your doctor, who can change the order. You could also contact your physician/s yourself and tell them how urgently you need more, stronger pain relief. If necessary, we need to be a squeaky wheel to get what we need. The alternative is unnecessary suffering!

If you are getting peaks and troughs of pain, you could ask for a slow release version of your drugs. Some peoples bodies synthesise drugs quite quickly - I had this problem, and my doctor changed me to slow release medications and that did the trick.

Thanks Beth2509. I didn't know slow release meds were available. Good that we have this forum to share information.
