Thigh pain after hip replacement

I'm wanting some feedback on high thigh pain after a hip replacement. I am 68 years old (female) and am 10 weeks post op cement hip replacement due to severe arthritis. I have been going on very well and thought all my troubles were over, but have now developed pain which seems to be centred just underneath the buttock and goes down the leg slightly. I have been doing the exercises that are given to you and the pain started when I had done a batch of them. Speaking to the physio she indicated I may have strained my hamstring. Am due to see her in ten days time, but I have read that this type of pain is not uncommon. Has anybody else experienced this? Am on painkillers again and very disappointed with this set back. Am I expecting too much too soon? Hope to get your feedback.

Had my thr nov 2015. After 2 sessions of pt my surgeon told me no more pt because he felt I was doing too much too soon. The pain in my buttock began before the surgery and I was assured by the surgeon that it would go away within weeks of the surgery. Pain continued until about 2 months ago. My current physician (at the pain clinic) diagnosed me with piriformus syndrome (you can look up the stretches for it on the internet). Within 2 weeks of doing the stretches just 4 times per day the pain was completely gone. It comes back whenever I overwork those muscles but a couple of quick stretches relieves it. I wasn't going to the pain clinic specifically for that, but they did give me a shot in the piriformus muscle which helped until i tripped in my back yard and re-injured the muscle. The stretches have done more good for it than anything. My main complaint has been the nerve damage and groin pain. They haven't been able to do anything for that other than pain meds which don't seem to be controling it any more. Nerve meds both topical and oral were a flop. If I had it to do all over again I would not have had the surgery and would have tolerated the pre-surgery pain a lot longer. So glad I have found these forums...a place to vent and know I'm not the only one suffering!

It actually sounds more like Sciatica but I would check with your doc just to make sure.
My doc told me that if I were having any sort of pain while doing any excerise, I was to stop that exercise and rest.
I am 2 years out and still have occasional thigh pain mostly on the side of my thigh. I had the anterior/lateral approach.
I still have a few quirks with the hip, but overall, it's been a success.
It does take time so don't push yourself!

Hi Soxy, and all those who shared experience in this forum. I found it quite comforting to read as I had total bilateral hip replacement in NYC May 1st, almost 8 weeks ago, and I had been recovering amazingly well, given 'fit-to-fly' ( back to my Caribbean home) only 23 days after surgery. I was doing great- an anomolie here- as I had anterior approach- they only perform posterior here so my local PT and GP had never seen a patient recover so fast. Being skeptical they put me thru much testing before they cave me 'fit to drive' 5 weeks out. I was doing my exersizes daily, and when they said my scars were healed enough I went back in the plungepool for easy exersizing daily (unfortunately the ocean has bee TOO ROUGH-for weeks now- waiting for it to calm back down before sea soaking). I went back to the gym one day. I was up and down our 17 stairs, one after the other ( not step, samestep, step) 5 or so times a day- and ya know what happened on a simple walk one day? OUCH! addictors! ouch psoas! Yep- I overdid it. And I have been in pain for over a week now, getting very stressed about it- like I ruined everything- like I'll never get better. The pain moves all around- butt, scar area, inner thigh- I get tingly nerve pain, sharp pain sometimes, it feels like my hardware " shrunk- my hips are so tight sometimes- plus- the barometer has been dropping as hurricane season starts- its been blustery and I wonder if I've become one of those people that can predict rain in her legs. I had run out of pain meds ( Oxy) and had to get more ( fun fact- they don't sell Oxy on this island, so-got Panadol). I am thankful for everyone here being reassuring that in time the pain will subside. I'm a bit of a hypochondriac ( hubby said) because I experience a setback and I think I've undone the whole procedures benefits- but that's not true. I am strong, only 15lbs overweight, 56 years old, and had prepared for this procedure by losing 40 (now 30) lbs and strength training. I am proactive in my recovery, have a great team locally, had an excellent surgeon and staff at HSS so, thanks for the chill pill and I hope we all are dancing in pain free joy in a few more months!

I would appreciate all responses and suggestions. I'm a 45 year old man that broke both hips when I was younger(13 for my right and 14 for my left) but August 1st 2016 I had my right hip totally replaced. I've never been pain free and actually have at least the same or maybe even worse pain since replacement. But over the last 30 years I've learned to deal with the pain with medication. The question I have or what I'm looking for a response to is...... I returned to work 2 weeks ago and was carrying something and stumbled and almost fell this past Thursday, i sort of kicked a high spot on the floor with my replaced hip side foot. Which caused me to stumble. And now a certain way I move my hip it feels like it's giving out. I can sit with normal pain, I can stand with normal pain but when I take a step, the pain is sharp and severe. Any suggestions as to what it may be? I didn't work Friday and don't work the weekend hoping it will "fix itself" With absolutely no luck as of now. It's Saturday morning. Can someone PLEASE PLEASE HELP. I'm new to the forum and hopefully posted this in the right place.

I had my right anterior THR 8 mos ago. Tough first 8 weeks but mostly normal now except for drawing leg up to put on socks or shave. Had left one done 11 days ago. All going well, couldn't believe walking without a walker or cane 5th day. But since yesterday my buttocks and hamstring has me in tears. Been to PT twice and did mild routine at home today. Can't walk at all now. Didn't see this coming. Told everyone who's called this one seems a walk in the park. Worst pain ever. When will it end. Going to PT again tomorrow and surgeon Friday. More opioids I suppose. Just awful pain. Read that since front thigh muscles are so stressed from anterior cut that hamstrings under severe stress .

I had my right hip done on January 30th of this year and was out of work for 2 weeks. It was quite rough, had to use a cane for about 3 weeks after graduating from the walker (5 days). I went through PT and am able to lift my leg up with hardly any pain. Then I had the left side done on July 10th and used the walker on the day of the surgery and day after when I got home. I used a cane on the 3rd and 4th day, then nothing on the 5th day which is when I went back to work. I was absolutely amazed. Then it seems like the tendon in the front became extremely sore and I'm trying to work on that. It does hurt when I walk now which is a huge difference from that 5th day after surgery when I don't think I had any pain. After sitting for a while, I get up and feel like I'm 100 years old. Once I walk the stiffness out, I'm ok. Very strange, but I will continue doing the stretches and leg lifts.

Hello Minnie54511
I had RTHR 7 weeks ago. I just turned 43 and have more pain now than before surgery. I have avascular necrosis from taking steroids for asthma. I was discharged on the second day. I have to say I had no pain and didn't take any pain killers. My legs feel so off balanced because of the surgical leg feeling longer than the other. Did you have this problem? The pt said there's only 1cm difference between the legs but I feel like it's so much more. Because of it my back and knee has also been affected. The doctor and pt have said this is normal and will feel fine soon. I just wonder if I have to get the other leg done before it feels the same length again. You were very lucky to have been able to return to work. I was given 6 weeks. I feel like a 100 yr old woman and now I have to say I'm thankful for having the time off.
