Thigh pain after hip replacement

Posted , 156 users are following.

I'm wanting some feedback on high thigh pain after a hip replacement.  I am 68 years old (female) and am 10 weeks post op cement hip replacement due to severe arthritis.  I have been going on very well and thought all my troubles were over, but have now developed pain which seems to be centred just underneath the buttock and goes down the leg slightly.  I have been doing the exercises that are given to you and the pain started when I had done a batch of them.  Speaking to the physio she indicated I may have strained my hamstring.  Am due to see her in ten days time, but I have read that this type of pain is not uncommon.  Has anybody else experienced this?  Am on painkillers again and very disappointed with this set back.  Am I expecting too much too soon? Hope to get your feedback.

    Hi Soxy

Yes hearing different opinion is a bit confusing-

I am 6 months post operation and still got muscles pain  when I saw the surgeon after I had and X-ray he said the hip joint is fine it is the muscles,  and my gp decided to send me to a pain management specialist, I will see him in 2 weeks and I will keep it informed

    Regards

I had a THR in 2014 and having hip, thigh and calf pain that around a 6-9 in pain level.  I’ve been back to my orthopedic surgeon many times as well as more physical therapy and another orthopedist to no avail. I’m seeing a neurologist and pain specialist now who has prescribed an oral and topical medication as well as aquatic therapy.  He ordered a spinal x-ray and MRI which I’m awaiting the results.  This doctor has also discussed bursitis. I believe that this pain is related to the hip replacement perhaps some nerve damage or the implant itself.  I’m hoping for some relief soon!

      Hi Joe

I have 3 or 4 tiny tears in muscles as shown in a special type of ultrasound. I'm 16 months post op and in pain all the time. I can't walk without a cane and am very slow at that. Every type of doctor or physio thinks he can fix me in his expertise. I'm ready to say my daughter's horse vet. Veterinarians are much more multi focused. He wouldn't treat me of course but deciphering the cause of the malfunction is WHAT I REALLY NEED! If it is a muscle tear, you should NOT exercise. It will only tear more! Rest, elevation and compression.

Let me know how you make out, please!

I saw a nerve specialist and he has decided that the pain in my thigh ect is being caused by a bulging disc, the nerve is being trapped. I am booked in for an operation to drill away part of the bone to make more room for the nerves.  I,m sure this is,nt the only cause of my leg problems but I,m hoping that it will relieve. some of the pain. I am then hoping to regain strength in the leg to make daily exercise easier.  Hoping this may help

    Hi there

I'm new to forums so maybe need a little time to find my feet !

I'm in hospital 12 hours out of surgery for a total hip replacement. The pain I feel is worse than the worst arthritis pain I've felt which I kind of expected at first - to feel pain I mean - but I honestly don't feel it's being managed properly. I've felt every hour since and have been unable to sleep - perhaps an hour and a half but that's all the staggered, intermittent snoozed being counted. It's now 7am and I imagine the doctors would be doing their rounds so should I ask them for stronger pain relief should there be something stronger? I'm on long and short oxycodon but it's really not making much difference at all. I'm sorry I know this is a long-winded post but any advice/reassurance would be appreciated. Maybe I'm expecting to much too soon from recovery? At the very least I'd have expected to be able to sleep without being prevented to by pain. I'm a 41 year old female and have always considered myself to have a very high pain threshold. I'm dreading tonight's 'sleep' if I'm not permitted to have anything stronger for pain.

Thanks in advance for any replies x

      Hi bev

Oh bless you , it's very early days yet but I do understand how you feel.

Don't wait for the doctors you should have asked for something stronger from the nursing staff during the night .

The pain will ease .. I felt the same after mine . I'm only 8 weeks on and now off crutches and have minimal pain .

Good luck it will get ease but you must ask x

It will get better. Therapy will sound impossible because of the pain. Keep asking for pain meds. Especially before therapy. For me the first two weeks were bad. Within a year I couldn’t tell it was even there. Never been a problem for 6 years. Certain restrictions. Muscles took a while to come back. Hope relived soon.

I had my left hip replaced on July 10, 2017 and the surgeon told me the pain I have is the scar tissue.  But last week I sat in a restaurant for a while and when I got up, I had the hip pain and tightness, and haven't gotten over it since.  I now walk with a limp due to the tightness and it's very painful to stretch it, but it does help.

Sorry to hear about your pain, I had my op last July as well and I was doing ok for 2 month then the pain got worse , I noticed that touching the muscles around the hip area is hurting went to the doctor I had ultrasound and showed a torn muscles

, it depends on the damage it can be healed by light exercises, mine is still hurting

      I hope you get better

That’s exactly what’s happening to me that upper hip tightness feels like my skin is over stretched and swollen

THIGH PAIN one year after LHR surgery.

Possibly loose hip replacement. What else could it be? I don't want a revision surgery.

Bev, I hope you are better by now.

Well, I don't know what happened.  I posted about the pain in my upper thigh which my dr. said was scar tissue.  I was at a restaurant sitting at a table and when I got up I experienced pain I had never had.  It was tightness where I had to stretch my leg back every time I got up.  I own property out in the country and had been boarding 3 miniature horses until Jan. 1st.  They are in my back yard and I am doing quite a bit of physical work to take care of them.  The weird part of this "story" is that last week I happened to think about my left leg (thp July 10, 2017) and realized I'm almost pain free.  Something released and it must be that I'm going up and down steps, hills, bending over, etc.  I have had both hips replaced, the first one was Jan. 30, 2017, and the pain level on both is now around 5%.  I continue stretching but mostly it's the physical labor that I believe is doing the trick.
