Thigh pain after hip replacement

I had a hip replacement a week ago and my thigh muscle above my knee is very tight at all times . This is the only pain have . I do my exercises 3 times a day and it seems to stretch it a bit but is quite painful. I also have swelling in leg going to my ankle . It's probably no concern I'm 49 years old.

after surgery a lot of us have different pains in different areas as different muscles take up the slack . You don't realise how many muscles work together to make us walk properly and when one doesn't work something has to step up. it will get better and keep up the exercises. walking and stairs will ease this over time. in relation to the swelling keep the leg raised above heart a few times a day when lying on back . I had no bruising past mid way on my thigh but know others not so lucky

Hi Keith
Thank you as swelling goes down I can feel it is the whole thigh which is understandable and I do need to keep stretching to get it working properly again . I think I was looking on the internet too much and thinking I was developing a blood clot . I only had bruising around wound area so have been lucky there as well . I have been elevating when laying down so will continue what I have been doing . Thanks for easing my mind.

Still get a bit stiff after sitting too long bit thats getting less . Im 73

Hi,
I had a LTHR about 12 weeks ago and I suffered from discomfort in my left leg just above the knee, as weeks went past, I found the soft tissue/muscle tightness subsided but went to an area just about the previous area of discomfort. This happened for maybe 6 weeks and has virtually disappeared now.
I still sometimes get what feels like nerve pain across the top of my left knee when I bend it fully, doesn't happen all of the time and I don't get this nerve pain across top of knee cap when I walk, only when bending it fully.
A lot of soft tissue and muscles have been cut during your THR, you just have to be a little patient as it takes a while for these to heal fully.

Hi Kenmar
Thank you I feel normal now knowing it is just part of the process.

Hi Andrea, yes I was told that the swelling was pretty normal. I had really swollen legs for a couple of weeks. As others have said, raise your legs a bit when you can, and put something cold on them. Someone ages ago posted about wetting a face cloth/ flannel, and freezing it. That's easy to wrap around. Good that you're doing your exercises! All the best, Judith

Hi. Although I didn't have a hip replacement I did have three screws placed through the neck of my femur. It seems I missed out with the knee pain that everyone else has been saddled with, but it did take a lot longer to get mobile. 12 months down the track I still experience tightness in my thigh muscles from time to time and swelling of my ankles. Doctor said this was quite normal even after this long. Its been a long journey at times but I made it through. Take care and dont overthink everything!!!
