Thigh pain after knee replacement

I know some people suffer with thigh pain after a TKR . . and I wonder how many of them actually end up with this permanently? At the moment, the pain in my thigh usually starts about ten minutes after lying down, and then wakes me in the night with excruciating pain which literally makes me scream and tremble. It feels as if someone is ripping the leg apart with a burning knife. Strangely, though, during the day it just feels a bit sore to touch and stiff. I'm worried that this nerve pain will be permanent. since day three of the operation, I've only been given paraacetamol for the pain, and I've really reached the end of my tether and been reduced to a trembling wreck by this pain. I had the operation a month ago, and although the walking and general moving around is better, the pain is infinitesimally worse . . any hope for the future?

I suffered with this pain two years ago after bilateral knee surgery and the remedy for this is TONIC WATER that contains QUININE. Trust me it works it was recommended to by a relative who had similar surgery. You can find it in the supermarket. If you live near a Fairway Supermarket you will find it there. Take a glass at bedtime and you will feel the difference.
Be well. Let me know how you feel. God is in charge and all is well.

Well, I am ever so grateful that I found this site! I thought I was the only one with such pain 6 weeks post surgery! The 3rd day after surgery, I started feeling a LOT of pain at the top of my leg - the pain surged up to my butt. The only thing that I could figure would be causing this was that a nerve must have been pinched when they put the tourniquet on my leg before surgery. Painkillers do not seem to touch nerve pain, at least not for me. The only thing that seems to help (a little) is my heating pad. So, before I go to bed, I have the heating pad on my upper leg & backside, and an ice pack on my knee. Then, I hurry up to get into bed and pray that I go to sleep before it starts to hurt again! I have spent MANY nights on my chair in the livingroom with my heating pad & ice pack - believe me! I can definitely understand why they say that recuperation time for a TKR is 2 to 3 months! I still have stiffness and swelling in my knee but that pain is nowhere close to the nerve pain I am having in my upper leg! Thanks for "listening!"

I made rice bags that I hear I'm the mi-crowave for 45 to 60 seconds. I place one on to and one underneath my thigh. It gives me great relief. I cannot do ice. I don't know if you are able to use heart at this point in your recovery but, that has work -ed for me. Also, Tumeric, Ginger and Cin -namon tea with a pinch of black pepper helps. That is if you can take this. I put honey in it to sweeten. I will be praying for you. Blessings

Should say, I heat in the microwave.

My surgery was in 2006. I still occasionally have the pains and they are severe but this is what I've done. I have several severe drug allergies so I had serious pain issues after surgery. I truly understand.

Hi There! I had my TKR 2 months ago. I also have had a lot of pain in my thigh, both upper and lower! After 2 weeks, the only painkillers I have taken is Tylenol Extra Strength. What I have done before going to bed is put an ice pack, both on top and below my thigh - then I rushed to bed and prayed that I would go to sleep before it wore off. Most of the time it worked at least for a few hours sleep. Ice it, Ice it, Ice it! That is definitely my recommendation!

I've never been able to tolerate ice. Even in the hospital NO Ice!!! Now after 13 years I still use a rice bag on the top an bottom of my thigh for relief. The pain comes from where the nerves are cut to do the replacement. I had both mine done at the same time.

It will get better. It does take time and the more you move the better it is. I had bilateral replacement. Witch Hazel is good to bathe your knee and thigh and leg in. It helps pull the soreness out and, coconut oil is also good. I'll keep you in my prayers.
Blessings

I'm about 11 weeks out from Total Left Knee Replacement...I've had significant pain from ankle all the way up to the top of my thigh. Many nights I wake up after 3-4 hours of sleep in horrible pain....OTC meds haven't helped at night. Massaging or kneading is somewhat helpful. I'm unable to get comfortable in bed...no amount of pillows, wedges, or propping helps. it is less bothersome during the day if I pay very close attention to icing, elevating and medication.
Once it starts, it's very hard to get back under control. I'm supposed to return to work in about 12 days and am unsure how I will manage due to the nature of the work ( correctional facility) and location ( secure facility). The thigh , calf and ankle pain are worse than the knee pain prior to surgery......I've heard Lyrica may be helpful fir nerve pain. Other suggestions?

Hi there! I feel your pain. march 6 2020 will be 7 months for me. No pain meds after the 1st week. I've been doing great!! However, approximately 10 days ago I road 12 miles on my bike. (Which my husband and I have been doing consistently 10 miles a day for 3 months) That day I got off the bike and the pain in my inner thigh on my left leg is so painful. ice, heat, massage. Nothing seem to help. has anyone experienced something like this 7 months post op? Thank you for your feedback!😊

I think that was too much for you. Probably a mile or two to start back then increase a little at the time. It will take time for your leg to heal completely. You don't want to have to repeat the surgery for causing issues from overdoing things. just take it she and easy.

Both of my knees were replaced at the same time in 2006. I had a lot of pain issues because I have severe allergies to lots of medicines. Especially pain meds. The pain you're experiencing is the nerves trying to reconnect and the muscles too. I've had good results with the rice bags that I made. I place them in the microwave for 1 minute 30 seconds and then put a bath cloth between my upper/lower leg/thigh and the warm bag. It helps. I've never been able to tolerate ice from the day after surgery or even before. It just doesn't work for me. I don't have this horrible pain all the time but I have found that if I wear flat shoes several days in succession I have this pain but, then I've never been able to wear flats well even as a child.
When I needed surgery I wore at least a 2 inch heel. If I do excessive walking out exercise it causes this pain. If you don't move about it do some frequent walking and gentle exercise you will have negative issues. But, if you do the PT and continue to be mobile things will improve. I don't know how long it will take for the pain to no longer come but, my prayer is that one day it will be gone. I'm thankful that I had both my knees done at the same time. In spite of the horrible occasional ripping pain my knees are awesome Dr. Jeffrey Murray did an awesome job and I am so very grateful. Many blessings to all of you
