This is the second time I have had De Quervains tenosynovitis, previously it was in both hands and caused by picking up my young son with my hands under his arms, thus straining the extensor tendons in both thumbs. This was very disabling as i couldn't hold a pen or grip anything that was more than very light for about a fortnight. This time it is only my left thumb and caused by gripping and carrying heavy files at work. I've been given a splint which helps to rest it, but what i've actually found most useful is to fasten my thumb to my index finger with a velcro strap. This means that I can't forget and use it to open doors, pick things up or grip the steering wheel because every time you do it starts up the cycle of pain again which is only resolved by rest.

I have tried tying thumb to forefinger and it works to give your tendons a break for a few days. However in the end had to have a cortisone injection which worked well after two days. Have now got a second bout 6 months later and have given up hoing in the garden which is what set this off.

Hi. I don't know if you still are on here as 11 years is a long time. I have de quarvains (wrong spelling probably)

Mine has turned up now a second time, I'm a housekeeper and do a lot of repetitive work.

First time round I hadn't a clue what it was until doc did a simple test putting my thumb into palm of my hand and bending my wrist to one side when I hit the ceiling with pain she diagnosed it.. I had cortazone injection in both wrist Ouch.. It worked for about 5 years now it's back. I've invested in magnetic bracelets rubber ones as I can wear them 24/7..

It would be interesting to hear back from you.

    Regards

    Margaret
