Those who've had nhs surgery, few questions...

Hi all, hope all is well 😊 I was just wondering if any of you could give me your experiences?
After surgery, how did you find out what happened during the op? Ie. What had to be performed, what was found, what type of cyst, how big cyst was etc? Was you spoken to by surgeon/consultant/nurse afterwards? Was there a summary in your discharge notes? Did you get any correspondence by post about your op after?
Also for people who had recurring cysts how soon after removal did you develop another?
Sorry for all the questions lol. Thanks you in advance!

I’ve had two surgeries and both were different, first time the surgeon came to see me after the op and told me how things had gone, I was a bit spaced out but relieved to hear so soon. I also received a letter through the post informing me of the biopsy result 3 weeks after the op and advised I was discharged.
Second time round was not as pleasant, surgeon didn’t come and see me but sent someone else, was told simple cyst and had severe adhesions removed. That was literally the conversation! I saw my surgeon doing a ward round the following day and he still didn’t come anywhere near me! Rude! It wasn’t until i was discharged that I discovered they also removed 2 cysts from the opposite side, which sent me into a panic
I then received a letter through the post with just an appointment for 6 weeks post op, it was at that appointment I found out the results were ok.
Id gone to my GP to renew my sick note and it wasn’t until then that I discovered that my cyst had ruptured during surgery, having been told I had to have a laparotomy to avoid this happening in the first place was quite unnerving as I was still waiting for my biopsy results at that time.
The two surgeries could not have been further apart in care, having an understanding surgeon definitely helps your recovery move in the right direction. I’m still angry 10 months on!
I’m somebody who needs to know all the details however gory!

I second you on wanting to know all the details!
Sorry to hear about the lack of information you had, no wonder you are still angry, lack of information Is exactly what I'm worried about - after my op last week the surgeon came to see me when I was in a little world of my own and he was pretty vague.
I thought I'd have a detailed discharge note as in a previous operation it had all the details of what was performed and seen, etc. The discharge note says laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal. That is basically it. Hes discharged me so I won't be seeing him again. A nurse mentioned my blood pressure had gone high and treated during the operation but there was nothing about this in the notes
I'm not sure if anything will be forwarded to GP or if I perhaps receive a letter...surely they have to record everything done and seen during an operation...? you'd hope lol.

Your gp should definitely receive a more detailed report of your procedure, generally they go into much detail along the lines of instruments used, where they cut, what they observed whilst inside, and how you were repaired so to to speak. My gp was very good and read the report to me, for 1, I was a little more conscious and able to take it in and 2, it helped me to understand my recovery and what to expect from myself. I learnt more in my 10 minute gp appointment than I did in my 4 day hospital stay! also my gp knows I work for the NHS so I like that I get the facts!
I think most patients just want to know everything went well and get the hell out of hospital, I guess surgeons just do an op and move onto the next one and let the nursing staff do their job. I think I just rubbed my surgeon up the wrong way because I didn’t opt for the op he wanted to perform....whip everything out and be done with me 😡
Hope your recovery goes well, I wrote a diary during mine so if you want to know what is normal for what stage then feel free to ask. Take care. 👍🌞

Hey, yes like you say some people just wanna get out the hospital, no info required! For myself and possibly you and other people having lived with such a thing inside you for a long time and causing issues such as pain you want to know everything about it (kind of like justice after a long court case!? lol)
I'm glad your GP gave you the information you needed though that is very reassuring!! how are you now?
Thank you for your reply and well wishes I'm doing OK, my belly is like a beachball and there is an array of bruised rainbow colours around the incisions at the moment lol. xx
