Thought I had osteoarthritis..........

I had a successful THR two months ago and all is well.

Today I received a letter from the surgeon confirming what had been discussed at my 6 week check. I had thought I had osteoarthritis in my hip but the letter indicates I had my hip replaced due to "severe avascular necrosis". Has anyone else had this condition, is it due to arthritis ?

i am at the start of hip problems and had an MRI that showed some flattening of the head of the femur which may be suggestive of avascular necrosis. Am awaiting an NHS orthopaedic referral appointment. What were your symptoms of osteoarthritis that necessitated THR?

Initially, debilitating pain in my knee. Knee arthritis was ruled out before the hip diagnosis when a second x ray indicated complete loss of cartilage. As I said the avascular necrosis only became apparent on an x ray on the day of the operation.

Also in the end I could hear the bones rubbing against each other and it was even more painful. I had to use an elbow crutch to aid walking
