28 yo male. Had unprotected sex with a new male partner (one night) on Dec 27th.

Soooooooo. On Jan 1st, I had a rash on my right buttock. Didn't think much about it, scratched it and put some Spectro on it. No idea if there was blisters, but it stuck to my boxers twice (could be because of liquid, scabbing or Spectro, no idea). It then grew bigger, and I saw two distinct holes in the center of it (which, to me, look like herpes ulcers).

Here's a photo of what it looked like at this stage :

Looking at it under spotlight, I noticed about 15 small red spots all over my buttocks / upper thighs. That when I freaked out. ( Absolutely nothing in the anal region or the groin.)

I went to the clinic two days later, and got tested for HSV (don't know if culture or PCR) as well as other STDs. At that point though, the rash has a scab, and no liquid. By looking at my ass, the doctor said she was unsure if it was herpes or something else. She told me she was 50/50 about it. She prescribed me Valtrex since I asked for it, but said she wouldn't recommend taking it and to, instead, keep it until there's another outbreak later. I took them for 5 days.

I then got a call from my family doctor. All tests came back negative, except for the throat swab which revealed Strep A. At that point all the little red spots grew bigger and started scabbing right away, not a blister in sight. Looking at the situation, my doctor told me that she thought it wasn't herpes but a skin condition, probably a fungus. She told me to stop Valtrex and prescribed me a tube of Lamisil lotion (antifungal), antibiotics for my Strep A and sleeping pills.

In the meanwhile, over two weeks, pretty much all the spots began clear up, except two : another one on my ass which grew a little bigger, and one appeared on my right lower mid-thigh.

Here's a photo of the evolution of the spots :

I've been applying lotion for weeks now, and pretty much everything disappeared or somewhat faded, except the damn spot on my leg, which leads me to believe this is going away by itself and not with the help of the lotion.

In the meanwhile, I had an appointment with a new doctor that was scheduled months ago, to get approved for PReP. She deals with STDs on a daily basis, took a look and told me that this didn't look like herpes to her. I got tested for a bunch of STDs again, and nothing came back positive. The urine test showed anormal traces of leukocytes though, which can be associated with lesions inside the uretra.

By the end of last week, I was starting to feel a little better, starting to believe that this could really be fungal. But last weekend I got the urine results and that made me freak out a little bit, plus I started to feel a sensible spot in my left buttock, and a burning sensation in my left thigh. I immediately thought this could be a prodrome, and checked myself thoroughly, but nothing appeared. This sensation has been going for a full week now, without slowing down. Of course it reminds me of the situation at every moment, making me freak out even more.

Here's a photo I took tonight, more than a month after finding the first rash : (the big red spot is the initial rash, and you can see the spot on my thigh) :

I've suffered from Shingles in the past, and the burning feeling is somewhat similar...

I'm hesitant in taking the blood tests for HSV in two months since the results can't fully be trusted, and the fact that I could get a HSV-1 positive diagnostic and never know if it's oral or genital unless I get a positive swab test in the case of another outbreak.

This whole thing is driving me nuts.

Other things to consider : I'm also on anxiety pills (Zoloft).

    Thoughts ?

    Sorry about the long post.

im certain this isnt herpes but you definitely caught something from whoever your partner was. skin related not std related. you should see a dermatologist instead and see what they can do

That was my first thought too, but the constant under the skin "burning" (seems like nerve pain) in my left buttock and leg have been messing with my head.

Under skin burning sensation in my upper left thigh is still there, for 10 days straight now. 😕

it looks like yur dealing with Erythema multiforme. its a allergic reaction mostly caused by the herpes virus. ive been diagnosed in july 2019 with hsv2. 2 weeks after my first outbreak thats when they started to appear and they hurt like hell just never got it on the butt. i comes in very different forms. mine looks different from yours but i kno a lady who is dealing with it and hers look exactly like yours. i had my 2nd out break in late november and ive been dealing with my 2nd round of this raSH SINCE JANUARY. i think the valtrax is keeping it a little under control since this time it dont itch or burn like hell. but i am expected to get this everytime i get a out break which sucks because i dont even mess with it but some how they get big and burst open and then heal leaving permanent damage on my skin.

I've read into that, but I've yet to find a picture of e.multiforme where it's kinda scabing like mine did. Could be though... 😕
